Is unRAID for me?

Featured Replies

Hi, first, I really like what unRAID can do but I am in doubt wether this is the real solution for me.

I have build an all-in-one server, that should be running Plex, CP, Blueiris (4 1080P cams) and should be able to play a game once awhile. (Eg. Battlefield 1 when it gets released).

What I have now:

MSI SLI PLUS Z170

I6700K 4,4GHZ

32GB Corsair LPX 3000MHZ RAM

1 x 500GB EVO 850 SSD

2 x WD RED 3TB

I am planning to buy either a 1070 or 1080GTX. Also planning to insert a parity disk at some point.

My plans were to create a Windows Server 2012R2 virtual machine that would be running BlueIris, and since it was up and running anyway, it could host Plex, CP, Torrent. (No need for Docker then.)

Then create a gaming virtual machine based on Windows 10 with GPU passthrough.

Am I off here or? The most simple solution I could come up with was to just install Windows 10 directly on the hardware and then install everything in that. But that would not be so much fun though :)

My concerns is that I might loose some performance on the gaming virtual machine? Though missing the GPU to actually try this out.

But what do you think?

First problem I see: I6700K 4.4GHz i.e. overclocked. unRAID isn't the most conducive thing to run overclocked e.g. if your machine crashes, you risk data corruption (worst case) and a very long parity check (best case).

I tried MS Server 2012 briefly but stopped when I realised it has the same RAID 5 flaw as traditional RAID 5 arrangements (i.e. 2 drive fail = you lose ALL your data). I switched to unRAID for that reason alone.

For your case, I don't think unRAID is suitable (other than a fun project). You only have 2 drives so you effectively run a mirror arrangement -> that can be done on pretty much any platform. Or you are running without parity, which again can be done on any other platform.

I think unRAID is totally for you, from what you saying all you want is to run a plex server, CP and some IP CAM software? All this can be achieved by using dockers.

You could run a win10 VM for the IP CAM software dont think theres any need to run windows server. Also gaming should be an issue with that graphics card. If you look on youtube theres a video of multiple gamers using a single unraid box.
