Extending USB

Featured Replies

Not sure is this the correct sub-forum but I'll ask anyway.

What are people doing to extend USB? I have my unRAID machine running a Windows XP Pro VM which I want to use for a workstation. Problem is that the machine is downstairs in a cabinet while my office is on the floor above. By line of sight it's probably 10ft - 15ft between the two but on a different floor (wooden beams not concrete between floors).

What would the best method be for extending USB for keyboard, mouse, etc? I could probably get away with an RF keyboard & mouse which would probably do 99% of the time but it would be handy to maybe have a USB hub on the desk. There's an Ethernet port at the desk so I can get the video signal over HDBaseT. Under the floor boards at the desk I have 6 x CAT6 passing by unused so I could potentially use one of those for either USB over CAT or USB over IP.

Just looking to see what others are using in their setups.

If it were me and only 15ft between 2 rooms. I would drill a hole between both rooms.

This would allow you to

1. Run an hdmi cable for graphics passthrough for you monitor.

2. Run a usb cable from the unraid to you office room.

3. You could passthrough a whole usb controller then from that attach the usb cable and have that plugged into a powered hub on your desk.So you then could hot swap any usb device from your office keyboards/mice, usb flash drive external harddrives printers etc.

By far the best and cheapest solution ( and best quality) rather than trying usb ove cat  hdmi over cat etc

If you have CATx cabling in place a HDBaseT with USB pair would be pretty slick. As long as you get the right pair for your distance.

That said, I think when you do that the USB is limited to 100 Mb/s as all it's traffic gets encapsulated as network traffic. So if you want high speed you will need a dedicated run that does full speed USB 2.0 or 3.0
