July 27, 20169 yr http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/harddrives-internal/sata3tbto4tb/st4000dm000.html I can get these drives fairly cheap, at £105. I see BlackBlaze seem to rate them for reliability. Albeit the ST400DX000 seem to be better, but I can't find those. I currently have 7 3TB Seagates, but a drive has just failed and three are failing. So I figured I'd replace with WD Reds as they seem highly rated. I was looking at 10x3TBs at £950, then thought 5x6TBs at £1025 so I can expand in the future. But, that's a lot of money to spend on drives all in one. I've been looking around and the failure rate on the 4TB Seagate Barracudas seem much better than the dreadful 3TBs. So I've got a new option. Which is to get 7 of these. Which will give me 6TB more space now, then expand with more 4TBs in the future. Anyone else using these?
July 28, 20169 yr Yes, I have two of them. They were shucked from cheap external Seagate Backup drives. Currently they have about 20k hours on them, no problems at all. Because mine came out of an external drive, they have unusual firmware on them, they act more like the old WD Green in that they park their heads lots, so there's about 40k load cycles on them already, but it doesn't seem to be an issue. I've used them in Windows boxes, in Synology, and in UnRAID. I'm very satisfied with them, and if I were buying 4TB drives again (unlikely), I'd certainly go for them.
