Help - ASUS P5Q Premium & USB Boot Problem

Featured Replies

Ok, I tried to get cute and added two new drives to my server at the same time that I updated my USB drive (Sandisk Cruzer Micro 2.0GB) with my new Pro license.  After reading through several posts, it would seem that the addition of the two new drives forced my bios to reset the boot order.  When the USB wouldn't boot after several restarts (thinking something was wrong with my USB stick), I went into the bios to check the boot order to find it was set to one of the internal HD's from my array.  I also noticed that instead of seeing my USB device in the list (as I had seen previously using the free version of UnRAID), now the only option remotely close to a USB was "Removable Dev.".  The other options are HD:P0-ST3200542AS, ATAPI CD-ROM and Disabled.  I'm guessing P0 refers to the position of the disk on my MB SATA controller and ST3200542AS is the model of the Seagate drives that I have in my array.  I've tried all of these options without success as well as changing the USB key to one that previously worked.

I'm looking for some advice on how I can get the MB to see the USB device again?  Yesterday, I was able to boot the free version of UnRAID from two different USB devices without issue and in both cases the USB drive showed up with the USB mfg. name in the bios.  I thought I would check here before I start removing hard drives, reformatting USB's etc. in case any else has had this issue before?!

EDIT:  And I'm an idiot yet again...just realized that the USB was showing up as a hard drive and the bios has an option to set the order of the drives.  SORRY!!!

It all depends on how stupid your BIOS is.

Let me tell you about my BIOS: It is really stupid! The only way I was able to boot off a USB key on this mobo was to completely disable all IDE detection in the BIOS.  It turned out that it makes no difference to Linux: Once it boots, all IDE drives (if any) are recognized all the same.

Thanks for the quick response Purko...see my edit.  Inevitably, I spend an hour or so troubleshooting an issue only to post for some help and figure out how stupid I was moments later when the solution is staring me in the face!  I must be getting old...  :P
