Question about https+owncloud

Featured Replies

Hi there, I'm sorry but I have a noob question about unRAID/owncloud:

(Sorry for the strange grammar but my english isn't very good)

I use unRAID since about 1.5 years* and I'm quite satisfied with it. Because I initially used my NAS in my local lan without connection to the outside I was fine with the lack of https. But then I discovered Dockers...

My current setup is that I live in a new flat where I (have to) share my internet connection with my roommates. I installed owncloud today for the first time to try it and figure out if I want to transition my dropbox folder to it. I noticed that the owncloud gui is accessed through http and not https.

My question is now if that means that if I am somewhere with my notebook (in the university wifi or coffee shop) and sync to owncloud that my owncloud password is transferred in plain text, visible to anyone, or has the Docker the ability to implement https?

Thanks for any info on this topic.

* there was a small break where I tried different operating systems (OMV, freeNAS, ubuntu, amahi/fedora) on my NAS because the file transfer from onRAID over gigabit is a bit too slow for me (30-50MB/s) in comparison to other operating systems (>100MB/s). But in the end unRAID (besides Synology) is the only one which gives me all the features I need (AFP, certain Dockers, very low maintenance)

thank you for the reply. I already had a look at nextcloud. Besides the fact that it claims to be beta* (I'm not sure if this is true for owncloud as well) I couldn't get it to work (I get a strange error message but this might be a subject for a different time). I really liked the fact that the owncloud docker has the database integrated and the setup is very easy.

I think I'll wait until nextcloud has an easier setup und transition there  :(

Side question: is there currently an alternative to owncloud or nextcloud at the moment which is proven to be stable? (I have offsite backups but it would be less than optimal if my owncloud/nextcloud breaks on occasion)

THIS IS A BETA CONTAINER AT THE MOMENT.  FEEL FREE TO TEST IT.  WE ARE NOT SUPPORTING MIGRATION FROM OWNCLOUD - USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.

I don't mean install nextcloud, but they're pretty much the same code at the moment as nextcloud is a fork of owncloud.  But later on in the guide I do show how to reverse proxy it, same method works for Owncloud.
