memory... where is all my ram going?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I was checking my ressources being used with top and noticed i barely have any freem ram left:

Mem:  2065204k total,  1528640k used,  536564k free,

When I use top though nothing seems to use such a big amount of the ram. Can anyone recommend another command i can use to see what may be eating away at 1.5 gigs of ram?

Nothing's really eating up your RAM. When you access any files (playing a video and stuff) the system buffers them up to all the available RAM. That's normal. Those buffers are discardable at any time ram is needed.

Its also worth pointing out Linux memory management is designed to "eat" ram. It will use as much as it can/needs but is very good at knowing what those elements are and when to replace them. Dont worry about it.

In essence Linux is not windows... it better :)

Good to hear :) I was thinking of taking a stick of ram out to put it in another machine but when I saw how much of it was used I freaked out.

I'll test it with 1 gig of ram and see how it holds up.

Thanks
