Server not listed in network

Featured Replies

I have 1 pc, 1 htpc, and 1 unRaid box.

The main PC has access to the internet only via wireless. I do have all the boxes hardwired to a router to use it as a switch to xfer files between them. I can see the HTPC but I can't see the unraid box. Why is this? All 3 lights are lit up on the router for each box but the unRaid is still unavailable. I just moved where I had it set up similar minus an internet connection and it worked fine. Any help would be great!

Ok where I'm at now I noticed that the network name is different then what I had and I think unRaid is looking for the original "Home" network. How do I changed the workgroup name on the unRaid box if this is so?

I'm still having no luck. I can see my HTPC on the network but I can't see my server. BTW I'm using Windows 7 on my main PC and HTPC.

I can't even get into the web interface. When I hook up my monitor to the unRaid box, I can see that it boots all the way up.

In the flash drive is a ident.cfg file in the config folder.

Edit it to have the name of your workgroup.  You can use the "mc" program to edit it, or put the flash drive in your PC and edit it there.  Reboot.

Something that's not connected to your current problem, but may give you an idea fot the future...

You could maybe use the router as a router, and relieve your main PC of that duty.

Even the cheapest wireless router can be flashed with dd-wrt and set up to get internet over the wireless port.

DD-wrt will also give you a dhcp server, and good dns caching server, among other things.

Let's get back to something more basic.  Do you have a dhcp server on your LAN/ are you getting a IP address assigned?  did you wait a bit?  The "master browser" on your lan needs time to scan for the new name.

type:

ifconfig eth0

If you see an IP address assigned, can you get to the server via its IP address?

Ok I got the ip address and I'm able to get use the web interface now. I still can't see the tower in my network. I think it has to do with my workgoup name. I'm sure its Workgroup but maybe its something else. I'm using Windows 7

Go to unRaid web interface - "settings" tab and set the Workgroup name.  Reboot.

In Win7, go to control panel - "System" and under 'Computer Name, Domain, and Worgroup' select change settings...another window will popup (System Properties) and then select "Rename this Computer" and change Workgroup name to match.

You need one computer on your network to be the "Master Browser".  Which one is it?

You can set your unRAID server to be the "Master Browser":

In the Settings section of the unRAID web interface, set the "Local master" to Yes.

Ok guys I figured it out and I probably didn't explain myself properly out of fustration. Basically what I have is 2 networks. I gave my pc a different ip address on the wired network and the unRaid box an ip address that was on that network. Now I can use my wireless NIC for internet and my wired connection to transfer files to my server and HTPC on another network.

Like I said, I'm doing this because the basement has no ethernet cable run from upstairs where the modem and router is. Hence I have a wireless NIC in my PC to connect to the internet upstairs. I have no wireless NIC in my server because the speeds are terrible that way. So I put a switch downstairs that I can hardwire my PC, server, and HTPC.

I know its confusing but it works and works great!
