My Frist unRAID Build - Looking for Feedback

Featured Replies

Hello Everyone,

I am looking to build my first unRAID machine, and I am looking for feedback on the part list I have assembled. This machine will serve many purposes: File Server, Plex Media Server, OwnCloud, Apache Web Server, MySQL database, 2-3 Linux VMs and possibly more in the future.

The Samsung 850 EVO SSD drives are for a cache pool. I want this machine to have the option of expandability. So I plan to get 3 Western Digital 4TB Red Hard Drives for the interim, but want to have the ability to support an additional 7 hard drives in the future(10 in total).

I am still unclear about whether or not I need a GPU? My plan is for this system to run headless, and I will either SSH or remote into the machine. I do not plan to ever directly connect a monitor into the machine, except for the initial setup. If I do need a GPU can you make any recommendations (this will not be a gaming machine)?

Budget: $2000

Hello, you do not need a GPU as the main board has VGA built into it for initial setup. You can use the built in IPMI for this if you want but I prefer the main BIOS for initial setup.

As for VM's you will VNC(built in), RPD, what have you, into each VM. The VNC works fine but for a more linear experience I use RDP.

For the Unraid console, yes, SSH will work fine I use Putty in Windows.

Cheers!!
