Big mess with dates

Featured Replies

I'm using version 3.0 and I suddenly noticed that the time was totally messed up. Well, the time was OK, but the day and month for today were some time in May this year. And worse still, it seems that the dates of files (at least as reported back on my Win 2K and Win XP machines) have changed apparently randomly - some dates are in the future, others are in the past. On some directories all the sub-directories have dates in the future, on others it's mixed. Of course, it's entirely possible that some of these other dates are wrong because the date was wrong when I wrote files to the server - I don't leave the server on all the time.

The date/time shown in the Web interface is consistent with that shown in the "date" command when I telnet, but I can't fix the date in the Web interface. For example, I typed in today's date and ended up with a completely different date: different day, month and year. I fiddled around a bit with entering various dates, but couldn't see any pattern - no consistent offset, sometimes the year changed, sometimes it didn't.

I've now set the date/time using the "date" command and the Web interface is now consistent with it. I know there was an earlier post regarding being off by 3 hours, but I think this is a different problem. While the problem is not fatal, it's more than a little inconvenient. There's no way I'll ever be able to fix the dates if they have been messed up.

I don't dare look at the folders with the family and kids photos: if those dates are messed up...... :'(

I can't duplicate that behavior in 3.0.  But starting in 4.0, the date/time handling has been revised.  In particular, the system now stores Coordinated Unniversal Time (UTC, aka, GMT) in the motherboard hardware clock and there is a new feature to download a timezone file for your location.

Hopefully this will clear up all the time issues.  If there is something wrong with your h/w clock on the motherboard, then of course every time you boot you might get the wrong time.

I'll certainly take a look at the BIOS time next time I boot up.

But my concern is even if the hardware clock is fubar, why would folders or files which have not been written to or created recently now show a different date/time?

Do you mean the date/time on existing files changes from reboot-to-reboot?
