Disk errors after disk errors

Featured Replies

Good day Unraid Community!

Long not ago, I've created a thread about some hard-drives giving me reallocated sector count that kept increasing (see thread http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=55943.0) First, the hard-drives are still present and I haven't yet RMAed them. If you've read the previous thread, you will notice that the last part was my parity had failed. I was able to successfully rebuild it but since then, I keep having disk failing one after the other. At this point, I do not trust that my server is really/truly going down drive after drive. I'm starting to think something else is failing (like SATA controllers or of that sort.)

I'm including a diagnostic file that will give you the overall picture with the latest syslogs. You'll see now that my disk #3 has failed while building parity. This disk didn't previously have any issues but looking at the log, it makes me wonder if I don't have a bigger issue somewhere else, like crashing SATA cards or the like. I'm by no means an expert and would like to get your input. Of course, I can rebuild disk #3 from scatch but I feel the drive is still good. It does not report any issues and my parity failed because it failed writing to the disk at one point in time.

Do I have a big server issue? How can I now trust anything at this point? It's all random and I just can't explain it.

Thanks for your help helping me diagnose the issue. :)

Have you tried re-seating all of the cables and cards?

Another case of SAS2LP crashing and dropping disks, disable VT-D if you don't need it, check for bios update, change the controller to another slot if available, if nothing helps consider replacing it with a LSI controller.

Thanks everyone, I really think my SAS controller is dead. Even with the latest firmware, it keeps crashing. I've ordered a brand new one (SUPERMICRO AOC-SAS2LP-MV8 PCI-Express 2.0 x8 SATA / SAS 8-Port Controller Card) with hopes it will resolve the controller crashing... I'll report back when I'll try with the new card. Thanks!
