Does unRaid share RAM between dual CPUs?

Featured Replies

When setting up Unraid on a server that has dual CPUs, do you get to pick which DIMMs get used for which VM? i.e. I make 2 VMs, each getting all 6 cores of its corresponding CPU, do I get to tell Unraid to make sure it's using the RAM that actually corresponds to the CPU each VM is assigned? Or do I only get to decide how much RAM each VM gets and it possibly gives a VM RAM corresponding to the other VM's CPU, causing inefficiency?

EDIT: Excerpt from below because it explains my question better.

CPU1 has 24GB RAM---I assign a VM1 to all cores of this CPU (I'm pretty sure Unraid let's me specify at least that) I assign VM1 only 16GB of RAM

CPU2 has 24GB RAM---I assign a VM2 to all cores of this CPU (I'm pretty sure Unraid let's me specify at least that) I assign VM2 only 16GB of RAM

Will unraid try to use any of the leftover RAM from CPU1 for VM2, or will VM2 only be allowed to use RAM from CPU2 as I believe it should to correctly allow corresponding CPUs and RAMs to only talk exclusively. In other words, I don't think it's computationally efficient for CPU2 to use RAM from CPU 1, but don't know if Unraid will let that happen.

You can only control the total RAM a VM is using.  There is no concept of dedicating specific RAM to a particular CPU.  If you have two running VMs then they are each allocated their own dedicated RAM while they are running so you need to ensure there is enough installed RAM to support both the VMs and the unRAID system.

Ok. So does Unraid only allow the correct RAM be used with the corresponding CPU? I'll try to make myself more clear as I'm still learning this all:

CPU1 has 24GB RAM---I assign a VM1 to all cores of this CPU (I'm pretty sure Unraid let's me specify at least that) I assign VM1 only 16GB of RAM

CPU2 has 24GB RAM---I assign a VM2 to all cores of this CPU (I'm pretty sure Unraid let's me specify at least that) I assign VM2 only 16GB of RAM
