Bizarre Temp Readings for WD 120GB Drive?

Featured Replies

I have a machine that I'm using to test unRAID. I have 2 drives in the system. A WD 250GB drive and a WD 120GB drive. According to unmenu the 120GB shows as 76C and the 250GB shows as 35C when they are spun down. The drives are installed next to each other and I'm aware the readings have to be wrong somehow?

I assume the 120GB drive is on its way to dying?

I have an old WD drive that does not report any temp but other than that works fine.  I would suggest getting a smart report on the drive and possibly running a smart short or smart long test on it also.

There have been pretty few notes about broken temperature sensors on newer drives - but a couple years ago (when the 250 / 300 / 400G drives were popular) there were several such reports.  I would not equate a faulty temperature reading with a failing disk.  I would look at the reallocated sectors and listen for strange noises coming from the drive as indicators of impending failure.
