Server Chassis

Featured Replies

Hello All,

I've been running unRAID for about 6 months now on an old Dell T300 with a single Xeon x3323 and 20gb of RAM. I'm using it primarily for Sonarr, CouchPotato, and Plex. I've decided that I'd like to add some VMs in the future, but the current hardware just doesn't seem like it'll cut it, especially if I wanted to add a video card in the future. So, I've started the upgrade process. This is what I've purchased/acquired so far:

Quick note: This is actually my first "top-to-bottom" hardware build. If anyone notices any potential compatibility conflicts, please let me know.

Processor: Intel Xeon E5-2620 V4

Motherboard: SUPERMICRO MBD-X10SRA-F-O

RAM: Kingston ValueRAM 32GB Kit (4x8GB) 2133MHz DDR4 ECC Registered (KVR21R15S4K4/32)

Cooler: Noctua NH-D9L

PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 750 P2

Case: Silverstone Technology CS380B

Accessories: 2x ICY DOCK EZConvert Pro MB982SP-1S

Storage: Mix & Match 3.5"/2.5" HDDs/SSDs (total cap: ~8TB) - nothing special

Cabinet: iStarUSA WM960B

My logic behind getting the cooler and the cabinet is that I'm interested in purchasing an iStarUSA D-380HB. The cooler is fully 3U compatible, and the cabinet was on sale for about $150, down from $290, so I figured it was a great deal. Here's my question to you all: I'm looking for a 3U/4U chassis with 8+ toolless hot-swappable 3.5" drive bays and fits a full size ATX motherboard. Does anyone know of a chassis that's in any way better than the D-380HB? My definitions of "better" would include cheaper, more drive bays, up to E-ATX compatible, 120mm fan vents for possible AIO cpu liquid cooler, etc... The chassis is currently listed for $389 on Newegg.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also, as a side note, I know that some of the hardware choices seem a bit overkill, particularly the PSU, but I'm of the opinion that if I find a great deal on a product, it's worthwhile purchasing for immediate use, in hopes of using it for a future build that could require such power.

Thanks all!

Why the Silverstone case if you're doing a rackmount build?

I needed a temporary case, and I found it for $110 on Amazon. Just a temporary solution until I can find the right server chassis. I'll end up reusing it for another unRAID setup at a different location.
