ozone614 Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 Hi everyone. I'm still in the process of getting all of my parts for my unRAID build. I've been reading as much as possible so I can make sure I have everything organized and ready to go. I think I have my split levels figured out but wanted to run it by everyone just to make sure. I will be running 2x 8tb drives for data to start and will probably add 2 more by year end. I will be using high water allocation. Just trying to think ahead and future proof to avoid disk spin up for my media server as I add more disks. Here is a overview of my current structure that I want my shares to mirror. HD MOVIES/Doctor Strange (2016)/DoctorStrange.mkv (A few movies have sub files or may be split into two parts) The share (HD MOVIES) can be split on all drives but the movie folder and contents to remain on 1 drive. Split Level: 1? TV SHOWS/The Walking Dead/Season 1/S01E01.mkv The share (TV SHOWS) can be split on all drives. The Series can also be on all drives but the individual seasons and files will only be on one drive. Split Level: 2? MUSIC/Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of The Moon (1973) [FLAC]/01 - Speak To Me.flac Single disc example MUSIC/Pink Floyd - The Wall (1979) [FLAC]/Disc 1/01 - In the Flesh?.flac MUSIC/Pink Floyd - The Wall (1979) [FLAC]/Disc 2/01 - Hey You.flacMulti disc example The share (MUSIC) can be split on all drives. The music folder and files will be on a single drive. Split Level: 1? PICS/Year Folder/Month Folder/Pic Files The share (PICS) can be split on all drives. The year folder and all sub folders & files will be on a single drive. Split Level:1? MUSICPRODUCTION/PROTOOLS/FILES The share (MUSICPRODUCTION) and all folders/files to remain on one drive. Split Level:0? ANIME/Akira (1988)/Akira.mkv Movie example ANIME/Hellsing/Season 1/S01E01.mkv Series example This is where I'm not sure on what to do. In my current setup I have both a mix of Series and Movies together. I want the share (ANIME) to be able to reside on all drives. I want the Movie folder and files to stay on one drive. I would like to be able to have the series folder on any drive and the seasons to be on one drive. I don't know if this is possible with mixed content like this though. I guess the easiest way would be to set it to split level 1 so the series would reside all on one drive. I don't have a lot of this content so I would have no problem with it fitting on a drive. Split Level:1? I'm a little OCD about how my content is stored. I wanted to make sure I was on the right path as I'm finishing up organizing all of my files for the initial transfer. I may just be overthinking all of this but I want to be as organized as possible before I start loading data onto the drives. Also a little off topic but I also have a question about putting data on the drives. I currently use teracopy on windows to copy files. I like that it has a built in checksum so I can verify the files after being copied. Anyone see anything wrong with just copying everything over from windows using teracopy?
itimpi Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 One comment about your split levels is that I think your use of level 0 is incorrect. If you want a share to be confined to a single drive then simply set the drive directly in the Share settings - not by using the Split Level. Split Level 0 is really intended for when you want manual control of the splits. With Level 0 you manually create the top level folders you want -and then let unRAID handle souls below that. For instance I have my TV Shows set up with shoes split by letter as the top level. If a letter is too big for a single drive I can create that letter on two different drives and let unRAID handle which of the two drives is to be used according to my Allocation method setting.

Thank you for the input. I wasn't quite sure on split level 0 and how it worked. This helps clear it up. I will just manually select the drive that share goes on. It's a small share and those files will never change. Do the other split levels look correct for what I am trying to accomplish?
lionelhutz Posted May 12, 2017 Posted May 12, 2017 Your split levels look right. 0 could work if you create the top level share folder (MUSICPRODUCTION) on the drive you want it to stay on and that's the only one it will go to. Or, just set the share to only the disk you want and don't worry about the split level.
