April 14, 201016 yr Hello everyone So i decided to start my server instead of using my desktop since I'm running out of space (~9 disks). Here's the list of my configuration: Case: Cooler Master HAF 932 Processor: AMD 5400 x2 (spare) Cooler/Heat Sink: Cooler Master RR-B10-212P-G1 Hyper 212 Plus (Lost stock cooler, will order Arctic Silver 5 + cleaner) Mobo: Biostar TA760G M2+ Motherboard Ram: 1 GB x2 XMS2 (spare) Hard drives: Mixture of WD green 1TB, Seagate 1.5TB, Maxtor 1TB. Sata Controller: Supermicro Add-on Card AOC-SASLP-MV8 + cables Docks: Cooler Master 4 in 3 HDD x2 PSU: Gona buy one from my local comp shop, too expensive to order online (Weight). anyone can estimate the Watt requirement for 13 HDs? So someone please go through this list again? cpu + mobo + heatsink compatibility? What about power supplies, do i need anything special to run 13 HDs? other cables? any other suggestions? oh and going to order items mostly from amazon, newegg blocks international cards + mail forwarding p.o.boxes thanks!
April 14, 201016 yr Generally figure 2A. current at 12 volts for each hard disk. Green or not they seem to take about the same startup current. Another 5-10A. should suffice for everything else. So you are looking at a minimum of 31-36A. of current. You will find power supplies in the 500 watt range will provide this amount of current on the 12 volt line. Choose a power supply with a single 12 volt rail. Consider the efficiency of the power supply and the cost of energy if you plan to leave your server on at all times.
April 15, 201016 yr Good choice of motherboard, I'm running the 'little brother' (see my sig). Do you already have that case, or are you ordering it? I wouldn't choose it. It is too expensive, and it doesn't offer nearly the expandability as, say, the Cooler Master 590. By the way, I've found that rubbing alcohol plus Q-tips work just as well for cleaning off old thermal compound as any 'official' cleaner. Works well for caked on dust as well. Too bad that you can't use Newegg, since they have free shipping on most of their PSUs. Look for ether Corsair or Antec Earthwatts at your local store.
April 15, 201016 yr The Cooler Master 590 case is good (I have one for my rig and can vouch for it), but be aware it has metal tabs which divide the 5.25in bays, making installing some to most disk enclosures somewhat annoying as you might have to push out remove these metal tabs to get them fitted in. You might not want a tray/trayless disk enclosure now (my original plan didn't include them) and seeing you're going with the Cooler Master 4 in 3, you'll be fine. For me to remedy this problem, I ended up buying some SNT-3141 SATA-II Hot-Swap 4 Drive RAID Enclosures, which were the only ones I could find wihich actually had slits to accommodate these metal tabs, which meant I didn't have to modify my case. Just a word of caution . The parts you've chosen seem fine. Good luck.
