Which Raid Controller?

Featured Replies

I just installed unRAID (my first time with it) on a Lenovo D30.  One of my main purposes for the box is to use Docker to consolidate a bunch of small apps off other machines, and I think it'll serve well for that, but I was disappointed to find that despite having eight 3.5" bays, it only has three 6Gb SATA ports.

Can someone suggest a readily available and reasonably priced raid controller that will work with unRAID with a minimum of fuss?

Thanks!

How many drives are you looking to connect? Are you in the USA or Canada or elsewhere?

USA.  I'd like to be able to support 8 drives -- I currently have a 1TB Samsung 850 Evo SSD that I'd like to use primarily for Docker support; for the rest I've got 6 3TB Hitachis that I'll probably drop in until the next good sale on 8TB WD Reds or something similar.

You can look on eBay, a Dell H310 it's a good choice however it needs to be flashed to IT mode, there is a thread on here on how to do it, its quite simple and just requires another pc to do it. Or you can look for an LSI SAS 9201 which does not require flashing for unRAID. Both of these will require  Mini SAS SFF-8087 36 Pin to SATA break out cables, each cable supports four drives, you will need two cables.

Awesome -- thanks!  I've got an LSI SAS 9201 and a pair of break out cables on the way.

Just to follow up -- added the LSI and breakout cables, and it's working like a champ.  Thanks again.
