Drive read errors

Featured Replies

I saw some read errors coming from disk 1 of my array. I'm not too sure how long this may have been an issue. The drive in question is a 1.5TB WD EARS drive and does not have 7 & 8 jumpered. I have read where this could lead to possible issues and was wondering if someone with a little more knowledge could shine some light on this. I only noticed this issue yesterday since I was in the process of replacing the current drive with a 2TB WD EADS. I was planning on re-using the drive but would like some advice on how I should go about testing it to ensure it is still in good shape. At his point I haven't done anything with the array and parity appears to be good.

Syslog attached, thanks!

Media errors indicate a bad sector. Unc says uncorrectable.

Please run a smart test on the drive. Look at re-allocated sector count, offline uncorrectable and current pending sector counts. Run long smart test and compare values. Doesn't look promising, however since you have just replaced a drive worth reseating the cables to the drive before testing.

Back-up any data on that drive.

If you are able to, back up all the data on that drive, install the jumper (note: will erase everything!), and run a pre-clear on the drive.  Then run SMART tests.  Pre-clear will allow SMART to check out the entire drive, not just the sections that have been previously filled with data.

If you aren't able to back up all the data off that drive, then, well, prepare for data loss.  Backup the most critical files, at least.

Thanks for all the help. I have already replaced the drive and everything is back up and running. I checked all the cables and they all appear to be secure. I will test this drive to see if it is still good. Fortunately the drive is still under warranty so if it is bad I can get a replacement.
