Does the "New Configuration" tool touch data stored on data disks?

Featured Replies

The 2 data disks in my 3 disk array are formatted with XFS, I want to change this to BTRFS. I've moved all the data off disk 3 onto disk 2 and am preclearing disk 3. On the Disk Settings page I changed the default file system from XFS to BTRFS. If I try to add the cleared third drive unRAID will rebuild the contents of the third drive undoing the preclear. If I use the New Configuration tool, will that touch any of the data on disk 2? I'm sure the answer is 'no' but I want to make sure.

Would I then create a parity-less 2 disk array using disk 2 and 3 and then re-add disk 1 and make unraid do a parity check? Is that right?

No.

As an aside, the preclear etc wasn't necessary.  After you had emptied out the drive's contents, all you would have to do is click on the disk and change it's format from "auto" to be "btrfs".  When starting the array you'd be prompted to format the disk.  No preclear, newconfig, or parity checking necessary.

All right I stopped the preclear and took the array offline. So I just re-add the third disk and as unraid is rebuilding it I go to that disk's settings and change the file system and there'll be a button to format?

Sure.  So long as you had originally set the disk to be not installed (so that you could preclear it), when reassigning unRaid will rebuild.  You do have to stop the array to change the format type, at which point unRaid will start to rebuild and ask you to reformat the drive.

My aside was basically that - an aside for future reference that you added in many, many extra hours to the process that weren't strictly necessary.

There basically is no way around the rebuild now though (even though you're formatting the drive), as the drive was removed (unnecessarily) from the array.

I've stopped the array but the file system for that disk is locked to XFS.

I'm using 6.3.5

Strange.  I can do it all day long.  (So long as the array is indeed stopped).

Okay I think I got it working. I re-added the third disk and let it start doing a rebuild. I stopped the rebuild and took the array offline. Then I could change the desired file system for disk 3, bring the array online and format the disk. Now can I take the array offline again and remove the parity drive...

Incidentally what is your avatar from? It's familiar.

[Edit] No I cannot remove the parity drive unless I let it rebuild the parity drive I guess.
