Reboot cycle

Featured Replies

** I don't think this issue is related to unraid on the machine however I'm hoping someone might have an idea how I can fix it **

Recently I have ran into an issue where my unraid server will reboot and within a second or so reboot again - this continues until I turn off the power supply or remove 4 HDDs (6 HDDs total in the system). Once I have removed the HDDs the system will boot and once it has booted I am able to add the HDDs one at a time (rebooting after each) until all the HDDs are running and I can start the server.

Periodically when the server is running it will randomly reboot, putting it into the cycle above until I address it. I do not know if this can be caused by:

- bad memory stick

- insufficient power supply (would be surprised as nothing in the system has changed for a few months previous)

- ??

I have been considering replacing the computer that houses unraid as it is quite old but as cost is always a factor if its something I can fix and not replace the whole thing I would prefer to do that!

It's easy to test for a memory issue - reboot your server (a clean power-down is always nice!), then when it comes back up, select Memtest from the boot menu and let it run for 24 hours or at least one complete test cycle. If that runs clean you can probably rule out memory.

It could be a PSU issue as well - it's highly recommended to have a PSU that supplies one 12v power rail, not 2, no matter how many watts it's able to supply.

Also, post your complete diagnostics zip (Tools -> Diagnostics) someone may be able to discover something in there that's causing your issues. Put Fix Common Problems into diagnostics mode and it will write logs to the USB stick so you can capture the logs just prior to the unintended power down.

I was unaware of the memtest, I will start with that and see what information that provides. Assuming that returns with no information I will move on to the diagnostics.

Thank you for the information!
