Formating?

Featured Replies

I went back last night and booted my box into another os so that I could format the drives with other information to cause unraid to reformat the drives. unraid reported correctly that I needed to format the drives, but as soon as I clicked the link to format them the web page showed me a lint to refresh next to where the format button was. when I hit refresh the link was gone and I could no longer communicate with my unraid. I left the unraid box untouched all night but this morning it still would not respond to the address in internet explorer. I hooked up my monitor because my setup is headless and when I connected it it looked like it was at the end of a script but it would not respond to the keyboard. I think it froze.

The reason I did this is because the first time I formatted unraid it did a similar thing and needed to restart the box. when I did that the unraid stated that the drives were formatted. So to make sure that I was correct I tried this again.

I cant get a log of the box because it froze and wont communicate and keyboard wont work.

I am now thinking of using preclear to get around the issue.

Is this normal? ???

By the way I am using unraid 4.5.3 but there is no place higher than 4.4?

I cant get a log of the box because it froze and wont communicate and keyboard wont work.

You'll need to hit the reset button, or the power switch.

I am now thinking of using preclear to get around the issue.

The pre-clear process will confirm if you are able to read and write to the disks.  It does not format the disks, but formatting is just writing a few sectors to the disk, so if you can rean and write, you can format.

You symptoms are those of bad hardware, or hardware not fed with the proper voltages.

Have you done a full memory check?  It is the most suspect with a new server.  Let it run overnight, or at least for several full cycles.  Then, you can use the hdparm command and the smartctl command on the disk to check basic functionality.

Is this normal? ???

Nope... not normal, you have some bad hardware, or memory with the wrong voltage, timing, or clock speed settings.

Hi Joe

You are correct i found that unraid does not like GF8200 chipset set to ahci on sata disks.

I have a ETS 8200a mother board and i did a bios update and disabled the ahci on the hard drive and no more frozen format.

Cool at last it looks like it might work.

this kind of problems might be cousing the problem where everything would start to write to the drives and all of a suden all the drives were read only? I am on a windows 7 box and i really need the easest way to use this raid.

What do you suggest? Joe and thank you again.

Well after much hurting I officially state that unraid does not like ETS 8200a mother board at all. At least for newbie me.

I have reinstalled it on an asus p4p800mx board and all my problems went away and I can format and access all data and life is good.

I am using a program called all way sync. It is a windows program is there another Linux based program that unraid can use? I would prefer a web Gui like unmenu. I would like to make unattended file sync's pulling from the unraid box instead of pushing from a windows box.

P.S. I work with many files that are in Japanese this is why I use All way sync only windows sync program that handles Japanese names on files or folders.
