Threadripper & GPU Passthrough VM support ?

Featured Replies

Hi,

First time poster here ! :)

I'm currently in the process of ordering parts for my new build and I would love to get a Threadripper 1950X CPU, however I want to

make sure it's fully working with Unraid.  I would also order 2 GPUs, either dual GTX 1080 or dual AMD VEGA 56 or 64.

I would use Unraid for the following:

3 VMs:

  • 1 VM with Ubuntu server (no GPU passthrough) (2 cores - 4 threads)
  • 1 VM with Windows 10 for DEV & Gaming (for me) (1 x GPU passthrough) (6 cores - 12 threads)
  • 1 VM with Windows 10 for Gaming (for my son) (1 x GPU passthrough) (6 cores - 12 threads)

The remaining cores (2 cores - 4 threads) would be allocated to Unraid.  Each VM would have it's own SSD or NVMe.

I don't plan to use any other functionality of Unraid i.e NAS.

My question:

I want to avoid any trouble with my configuration and would like to get the best performance for each of my VMs.  So I would like to know what is the current status with VMs and GPU passthrough with Threadripper ?  Will I run into setup issues, studdering, performance loss, etc ?

I'm looking at Threadripper as a platform, but would be willing to go the Intel route if there's too many issues associated with Threadripper.  However, going on Intel would probably add 1000$ to my build.

Can you share your feedback/comments on this ?

Much appreciated !

Bump.

I'm looking at going with the 1950X, and already have a Titan X (Pascal) I use for gaming with a Windows VM. I definitely want to make sure the GPU passthrough is working correctly before I pull the trigger on a the new mobo, CPU, RAM, and water cooling equipment.

I know I've seen mention of problems with GPU passthrough on here before, so I'm off to find those old posts and see if they were ever resolved. :-)

Edit: I should mention that there seem to be major fixes for Ryzen/Threadripper in the 6.4 release candidate builds, I think primarily due to having a newer Linux kernel. I'm not really wanting to run an RC, and will probably wait for the official 6.4 release, which I'm sure is Coming Soon™.

We are in the same boat :)

I just built a 1950X system with the unRAID RC that has the NPT fix. But my GTX 960s won't power up during VM start. :(

There's another thread with details.
