November 12, 20178 yr So, disk 3 on my unRAID server is showing up faulty with a red cross and I have no idea why... I've looked at the smart report (attached) and everything seems fine. I checked to see if data was still on the disk and accessible in /mnt/disk3/ and I could still access and view the data on the disk. So I then checked the SATA connections of the disk to make sure that none of them were loose and assumed it must have been some power anomaly or something else. So I then decided to reconstruct the drive and midway through this, the disk failed again with a red cross. I ran the smart test again and same results. So I guess my question is: how do I diagnose / fix this and does anyone have any idea what might be wrong? Apologies if I've missed any key info, all this is rather new to me. Thanks in advance...
November 12, 20178 yr Author Oh, diagnostics! I knew there was something I forgot to post! Here they are... diagnostics-20171112-1415.zip
November 12, 20178 yr Community Expert Disk looks fine, it's connect to a Marvell controller, they are known for dropping disks in some cases, I'd suggest you use a different controller or if you don't have one, trade cables with one of the disks connected to the onboard SATA and try the rebuild again.
November 13, 20178 yr Author Thanks for the diagnosis. I've swapped some of the cables and ports around for now, and rebuilt the disk - it seems to be stable for now at least. I'll have a look at getting hold of a new controller, do you have any recommendations as to a good one that supports 4 SATA ports (and is low priced)?
November 13, 20178 yr Community Expert Most 4 port controllers are Marvell, there a few LSI but they usually cost about the same as the 8 ports
