Using unRAID server to securely host websites in VMs

Featured Replies

Hi

Apologies if this has been asked elsewhere (I couldn't trace it with a brief search) but I was wondering if my unRAID server build can pull dual duty hosting VMs on which I'd be hosting websites (I'm only looking at three or four), and if so if there were any security implications? I have an i7-8700K with 32GB of RAM, so I'm hoping that horsepower isn't an issue.

Thanks in advance for your help

You probably have to change the unraid port for the web manager to not 80 or 443 for security reasons.

But i'm trying to think some security issues that can occour

The VM's should be on their own IP, and theoretically could be on their own VLAN for security. However... whether you can do it, doesn't necessarily mean you should. What is your unraid server currently doing?  Unraid is NOT meant to be internet facing, but if you know what you are doing you can expose specific services with a reasonable degree of security.

I don't think that a VM in unraid would be my first choice for hosting websites.
