How do I "use" Unraid?

Featured Replies

Hi,

Dumb question perhaps, but I've got my system installed. It's up and running. I've created two users and two user share folders... now what?

Do I need another program to move files onto the system? Do I need to download something else to browse the files? How do I login as anything other than root?

All I want to do is back up some files and be able to access them over home network. The most basic NAS function ever.

I've read the help section and a user guide I found in the forum... It jumps from where I am at into dockers and VMs, but I can't figure out what to do next. Is there some basic thing I am missing?

Instructions for Mac or PC please...

Thanks!

At its heart, unRaid is a NAS.  Store your files on it.  Transfer over the network to the network shares that'll appear.

No.  File Explorer is all you need

Logging in to either the command prompt or to the webUI is ONLY done by the root user.  The users you created are for accessing the files you store on it.

Thanks!

That was exactly what I was looking for and enough to make me want to buy a full copy of unraid. So if I want to make a folder that only one of my two users can access I set that up as the root user on the GUI? Where would the user login happen? At the folder level when you browse to it in file explorer??

Read in the manual about User Security.  When its applied, then Windows / Mac will ask for credentials to access the share(s)
