Slow Read & Write Speeds

Featured Replies

I'm not sure what information to provide but I've had consistently slow read and write speeds to my server. Both are around 8 mb/s from wireless and only around 11 mb/s using an ethernet cable.

I've looked through

https://wiki.lime-technology.com/Improving_unRAID_Performance

and attempted some changes but nothing has helped much.

At this point I'm trying to determine how I would go about troubleshooting, or what I should start with to begin eliminating issues. I've attached the diagnostics file. Any help or advice on where to start would be appreciated. I've done some searching for a few days now and haven't quite figured out how to eliminate things.

NIC is linking only at 100Mb/s, do you have a gigabit switch? If yes try a different cable, if not upgrade your switch, you can't get more than 11/12MB/s with 100Mbit Ethernet.

Thank you!

I have two followup questions

1) The motherboard is a Gigabyte H97 (GA-H97M-D3H) which has "Realtek® GbE LAN chip (10/100/1000 Mbit)". While I'd read somewhere else there were issues with Realtek drivers (I no longer remember if this was related to the NIC) what do you mean by a gigabit switch?

2) Possibly the answer to that question, the router is a Linksys E2500 which has a " Max. Link Rate: 300 Mbps"

Does this mean I need to look into the BIOS of the motherboard to figure out what's wrong there, or is the router to blame? Or did I completely miss what your were getting at?

Thanks again for helping me figure this out.

Your router is 10/100Mbit, to get gigabit speeds, more than 12MB/s, you need to buy a gigabit router or switch.

I actually have a gigabit switch. I plugged the server and the computer I'm attempting to copy to/from into the switch.

When I run ethtool eth0

I now get

 Speed: 1000Mb/s
        Duplex: Full
        Port: MII

Whereas previously Speed was 100Mb/s. I just tried copying a few files and am still getting the 8-11 MB/s time. Does this still point to need a new router, or should I start investigating elsewhere? Thanks again!

Maybe your unRAID now connects with 1Gbit/s speed. But does the other computer connects using a gbit link? Your 11 MB/s still matches the expected transfer rate of a 100 Mbit/s link.

And if it does check its link speed, it can be using a downgraded link or not have a gigabit NIC.

Using a different computer fixed it! Thanks again for all of your help!
