Auggie
n00b alert! I searched in vain (or perhaps I missed it in the hours spent reading and learning about UnRAID) but have not been able to find the answer. What mechanism does UnRAID use to alert when a drive fails? Do I have to periodically run disk checks manually myself or is there some nightly automated way to do that? Does it highlight/flash something on the web GUI, meaning I have to periodically check the web GUI (what about when I'm "out of pocket" of the server)? Or is there some automated routine that can, say send an e-mail? TIA! Link to comment
xamindar
There is an addon you can install that will email you I believe. But by default the only way to tell is to check the web gui which will indicate it unfortunately. Would be really nice to have an audible indication of a failure as just about every computer has a built in speaker. Link to comment

Would be really nice to have an audible indication of a failure as just about every computer has a built in speaker. Well I disabled my internal speaker since my UnRAID media server rig is situated in my A/V rack next to my Plasma and was making too many "unnecessary" beeps just during startup/shutdown alone. You don't happen to recall the name of the addon or where to get it by chance? Link to comment
Joe L.
The only built-in method to learn of a disk failure is to look at the web-interface. Since unRAID will simulate any single failed disk, you might not notice it at all as you use the server. You can still read and write to the "simulated" drive re-constructed by parity and all the other data drives. the only outward sign would be all the disks spinning. There have been several e-mail scripts written as add-ons. The easiest for many is the set of packages you can add and configure through the unMENU add-on. Basically, one add-on is to add a mail program and configure it to send mail through your mail host, and the other is a periodic check of the array status with an e-mail alert on detected errors. It is described here: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=5568.0 an alternative unraid_notify e-mail script with alerts is here: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=2470.0 Either will do what you want. The unraid_notify script will require you to hand edit the configuration files. the unMENU package manager has configuration screens to make it easier even though it will actually download, compile, and install the programs behind the scenes. It is also designed to allow you to elect to automatically re-install the programs when you reboot. Joe L. Link to comment
