June 20, 201016 yr Hi all. Just wondering if anyone here could demystify unRAID for me... I have an older Win XP machine which I've decided to use as a server. I have followed the install instructions to the reboot part; however nothing happens. I'm off to get a Lexar Firefly USB hopefully today (I was doing it with a card reader + flash card), so when I get that done I'll post if I still can't get it working. However, in the meantime I'd like to know if it's possible to still run Win XP as well as unRAID. How would this work? I'm not particularly savvy, just a warning. Not unRAID related, but I thought I'd also throw this out there. I'm mainly Mac so that (27 inch iMac). But I'd like to keep a Windows machine handy for the times when I need to dip into 3D Max or for testing purposes. I've already tried connecting my PC to my iMac with a DVI -> Mini DisplayPort adaptor, but apparently you need a Mini DisplayPort on BOTH computers. Do you reckon there's a way I could get a Mini DisplayPort into my PC? My dream is to be able to have one tower with unRAID, XP and OSX plus Mini DisplayPort to use only the one iMac screen. So let me know if you know how! Thanks.
June 21, 201016 yr Author OK, so I can't get the drive to boot. I've got a Lexar Firefly and have attempted the suggested USB settings. Here's a screen of the BIOS page. Could anyone help me out here? I'd really appreciate it. http://img.skitch.com/20100621-r2suffchcdch1t9m7tdqwhn7e.jpg

Since you've not posted the motherboard model, or the BIOS version you are attempting to configure, your question is equivalent to: I can't drive my car, can you tell me why? The image of the screen is nice, but there is probably at least one spot where you select the boot order: (USB first, then hard disk) And there is probably another screen where you select the specific device to boot from. The USB drive will be the one you need to select. Lastly, you need to tell us what happens when you attempt to boot. What does it say on the screen? What does it do? How far does it get? Joe L.
June 21, 201016 yr Also, on that particular screen, you are going to want to change "fullspeed" to "hi-speed" or else boot will be verrrry sloooow.
June 23, 201016 yr Author Yeah, I changed the hispeed option, didn't know if it would help me boot or not. OK. I've got a few screens for you. Thanks for the help btw. I'd love to get this up and running. Let me know if I need to provide more info... http://img.skitch.com/20100622-pdp7naqehn3ni8wq6u4pe1wrjy.jpg BIOS shots in order http://img.skitch.com/20100623-rhs21hnwskutugaex3rtnkduas.jpg http://img.skitch.com/20100623-jtmh29hu85h5umy8rg5a6dcx8u.jpg http://img.skitch.com/20100623-qwy631cga6s2j6cef9xdie9m58.jpg http://img.skitch.com/20100623-b2jmpx64jg1ygw4nb1y7yx9fah.jpg http://img.skitch.com/20100622-b8146kb5m8e3ycga6t5nup19bb.jpg BIOS subpages (settings I as are, some I've changed where USB is concerned) http://img.skitch.com/20100623-ftxcyjwp9y6er78cusf8pa4nth.jpg http://img.skitch.com/20100623-ji465nxqj2sgs63cc9xyybfg6b.jpg http://img.skitch.com/20100623-1miwmq2metrw1tgyspmtfnm642.jpg http://img.skitch.com/20100623-dung9ppybjc1e8kykaq622197.jpg http://img.skitch.com/20100623-pn2t7tspien8n2hkn4x984m37h.jpg http://img.skitch.com/20100623-6fgx3yr5dqqngbim3afhdbr8q.jpg So as you can see I'm now at the point of 'Could not find kernel image:linux' I did try reformatting the drive again and adding the hidden file as per instructions, making sure it was FAT32 etc (http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=6489;sa=showPosts).
June 24, 201016 yr Author Can anyone shed some light on the 'Could not find kernel image:linux' issue? I have no idea what to do.
June 25, 201016 yr Your machine reads and boots from the usb stick as it says syslinux 3.72 etc... Maybie the bzroot or the bzimage are corrupt. Re-download unRAID and try again. Also try to install the latest syslinux (see unRAID download page for it).
