January 18, 20188 yr I upgraded to 6.4.0 a couple of days ago, and on reboot, the server had a hard hang with an error in sata_mv.c. The problem seems to be similar to the one shown below. I was able to trace the issue to the last three new hard drives I installed. They are Seagate Constellation 3TB drives, model ST33000651NS. Once I removed those drives, the server booted. Just prior to the lock-up, there was an entry on the screen about drives are encryption capable but not enabled. I'm wondering if the new per-drive encryption might be causing the issue. Any thoughts on where to look or what might be the issue? Once I reverted back to 6.3.5 everything is working fine. Thanks Dan
January 18, 20188 yr There are known issues with those controllers and new disks and/or newer kernels, since they are somewhat old not sure any fixes are likely anytime soon, your best bet it to upgrade controllers or keep using an older release with older disks.
January 19, 20188 yr Author It may be time to upgrade, but it's been rock solid reliable up to 6.4.0, and the error is only with those drives installed. I have 3 of the cards installed in the chassis and 16 drives total.
January 19, 20188 yr Yeah, but doubt anyone will be working on that Linux driver soon, and even if you downgrade you'll likely run into issues again if you need to replace a disk with a new one.
January 19, 20188 yr Author The weird part is a ST3000DM008 Barracuda installed at the same time had no problems. It was only the Constellation drives. It's only 3 drives, so I'll rotate them out and try the upgrade again.
