Christopher
Today I added a new drive to my unRAID server, started it up and it dies around the time the 2nd HD controller card is initializing the drives. After some troubleshooting I discovered it was the PSU. I put my desktop 1000W PSU in the server and it started fine with 17 drives. Yes, I added one more. All the parts for my unRAID server came from my old desktop. Can you guys recommend a good PSU that will support 20 drives? unRAID Server Hardware: CASE: Norco RPC-4220. 6 x factory 80mm fans. GK20
PSU: OCZ GameXStream OCZ700GXSSLI 700W ATX12V SLI Certified CrossFire Ready Active PFC Power Supply The distribution on your PSU already say it all, you only have 12V3 for peripheral which only has up to 18A +12V1@18A,+12V2@18A,+12V3@18A,+ 12V4@18A What you need, and if you don't want more troubles, is a single rail PSU with at least 40A (2A per disk * 20) on 12V Throw in CPU and others i will say get one with at least 55A, for example this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139006 Link to comment
JustinAiken
My Norco build is using that same Corsair PSU, for exactly the reasons you mentioned... My machine isn't running yet (RAM getting here today), but I installed the PSU, and I wish I would have got a modular instead... there's no 5.25" bay in the Norco 4220 to route that cable mess Link to comment

Its getting on now however and has masssive ripple and noise as you go past 500W which may be a problem. Its a great PSU if you stay below 500W but above that it will be going out of spec in regards to noise and ripple. Although i did used to run an Epsilon with 16 drives and much more gpu and cpu with no issues, probably just aged badly. Seasonic have brand new higher output X/Gold range psus out now too. Christopher
Thanks for your input GK20 and terrastrife. I would like to go with a modular PSU. I found these here. Which would you recommend or do you have other suggestions? Corsair will be next in line Link to comment
bcbgboy13
I do not think the OP should pay attention to the numbers of connectors as he will need only 5 regular MOLEXes to connect these hard drives. What he should pay attention IMHO is the efficiency especially under 200 or even under 150 Watts as he has 20 x 7200rpm Seagates and they usually will sleep most of the time. Only Seasonic is rated 80 plus GOLD (the other three are Silver graded). Link to comment
