NAS unRAID

Featured Replies

Hello everybody and thanks for this community!

I'd like to know something that maybe simple to answer for you but not for me:

When you use unRAID to make a NAS, and a VM with like windows, when you access your NAS from your VM (windows): will it utilize ethernet connection to transfer datas or will it utilize the SATA connection from the same motherboard like  ?

Because I'm thinking that if it uses the ethernet to got out and in, it's a big bandwith loss... But It's not logical at this point for me.

Hope I'm clear enough...

Thanks a lot,

Don

Neither. The VM's network connection is virtualized in software, so transfers inside the same physical box happen at full speed. The VM thinks its talking over ethernet, but by default it's not the physical connection, so no data actually leaves out of the NIC.

If you have multiple physical ethernet ports on the server and want to separate the traffic physically, you can, but that takes special configuration.
