June 10, 200719 yr How important is it to have SATA2 (300) support on motherboard versus SATA1 (150)? Will it make a huge difference?
June 13, 200719 yr From my experience, there is a small but significant difference in performance. I see a range roughly between 10% and 30% improvement between a SATA150 drive and various SATA300 drives on differing controllers. The cost is small between motherboards with or without, so I would always go for SATA II support myself.
June 14, 200719 yr SATA2 also introduced two additional features useful for arrays: 1/ A signal on the power-connector which can be used to indicate hard drive activity. 2/ A "locking" connector style to support locking SATA cables.
