August 25, 201015 yr I just transfered around 2TB of data to my new unRaid and I am not sure the split level worked correctly. I created a share called iTunes and a split level of 4 so that all the episodes of a TV show season or all the songs of an album would stay together. I am finding many TV season with some episodes of a season on 2 disks. iTunes -iTunes Media -TV Shows -Futurama -Season 1 -Music -Artist -Album Any ideas?
August 25, 201015 yr What always confuses me is does the Share start at 0 or does it start at 1. Meaning would you actually use 3?
August 25, 201015 yr Level 4 looks correct using that directory structure. 4 should correspond to "Futurama" meaning that directory can split but the "Season 1" directory should not split. Don't feel bad, it might not be your fault. I found my "Movies" share split level setting ignored and Limetech couldn't be bothered responding to the email with details of the problem that I sent... I cleaned up the splits but I need to check it again and see if it's re-occurred. I was trying the fill up allocation method and changed back to high water so I'm not sure that caused an issue. If you're using that method then try another one. Peter
August 25, 201015 yr I personally found after tinkering with it a while was to copy things directly over to Disk1 and leave my shares as "read only". As Disk1 fills I planned on starting to fill Disk4 and as long as I have the same base folders then disk sharing should see it and display them in my HTPC.
August 25, 201015 yr What always confuses me is does the Share start at 0 or does it start at 1. Meaning would you actually use 3? My understanding is that 0 is the root. i.e anything on that disc. So, in the case above (assuming "itunes" is at the root with nothing above it) then "iTunes" would be 1, "TV Shows=2, "Futurama" = 3 etc.
August 27, 201015 yr Author I though I would get an email about a response on here so I did not notice the replies till now. Itunes is the share name, so I thought that Futurama is 3 and the individual seasons is 4 shich would keep all episodes of a season on the same disk? it did not happen too much and I corrected the errors myself. i will have to keep an eye on it in the future to make sure it doesnt happen again.
August 27, 201015 yr Yannis, you forgot the iTunes Media directory, which makes Futurama = 4. Peter Oops. You are of course correct - thanks.
August 27, 201015 yr Author ok, so i am confused. Do i need to make split level 5 to make the season stay on the same drive?
August 27, 201015 yr Author OK, I did some more testing. It looks like in my case I want to set the split level to 4. I have a 2tb drive with 300gb free and a 1tb drive with 500gb free. I changed the allocation to Most free and changed the split level to 99. I then copied a folder with many files to the season 1 in the futurama directory. It was sent to the 1tb drive. I then changed the split level to 5 and they files were again copied to the 1tb drive because it has the most free space. Next I change the split level to 4 and it override the allocation method and wrote the files to the 2tb drive because that is where season 1 is. So, the share is 0 and the first directory under it is 1. 0-itunes 1-itunes media 2-tv shows 3-futurama 4-season 1 Still not sure how some shows ended up with episodes on each disk from the same season. Maybe it was a fluke?
August 27, 201015 yr 0-itunes 1-itunes media 2-tv shows 3-futurama 4-season 1 Just to be clear - "itunes" is your share name? In other words, if you go to say disk1 in Windows Explorer you find a itunes directory on it. I just want to be clear that "itunes" is not the name of your server. Try this as the correct official numbering scheme; 1-itunes 2-itunes media 3-tv shows 4-futurama 5-season 1 Setting the split level to 4 means that "futurama" can split but "season 1" can not split. Like I posted before, I had sub-directories in a share split when I was using a split level of 1, meaning it should never have happened. I think that a certain combination of settings is broken but I haven't taken the time to figure out what ones. Post all the share settings you were using at the time of the issue. I'm curious what was set. Peter
