Weird problem: Cannot copy filename.ext: the path is too deep

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I got this problem once before but didn't really care about it at that time as I was doing lot of testing so I assumed I may have done something wrong.

Now, the problem is persistent and doesn't make sense to me. I'm using a PVR which record shows here and there. This PVR is actually running on Windows 2003 server. Before Unraid, it was saving to my opensolaris box and never had a problem in over a year. Since Unraid is installed, I've configured my PVR to use the \\tower\disk1\recorded, \\tower\disk2\recorded and so on (not wanting to have the PVR writing directly on a user share as I read it can be problematic (I've noticed a delay when starting a copy using user share so I assume that may be the reason of the problem).

Anyway, I'm using link to direct disk which should be the best option. I've tested this 3-4 times in the last 24 hours where I configured 3 recording. The first one is always getting through. The other are always causing error message that Windows report as : "Delayed Write Failed: Windows was unable to save all the date for the file \device\WinDfs\Root\tower\disk1\recorded\filename.ext. The data has been lost."

I've tried to copy a file manually and I'm getting "Cannot copy filename.ext: the path is too deep" after a while (1-2 minutes timeout). If I take a file that is already showing in the directory \\tower\disk1\recorded and do a copy (from the Windows Server) on the same directory, it will work. Anything from the Windows server to the Unraid server won't work.

So, I think it may be related to the combination of Windows 2003 Server with Unraid. Is there something to change in my setup for this to work? This Windows Server is in the same workgroup (no active directory) and the user has the same password on the server and Unraid and access work normaly for read and the first wrote recording.

Any idea? BTW, the syslog is not showing any problem. And as it's working from other computer, I'm sure it is not a problem but just some kind of problem between Samba and Windows 2003 Server. Just need to know how to fix it.

Thank you.

Hi,

As stated in my previous post, the issue was only apparent on my Windows 2003 server while all other desktop (Windows 7) were working just fine on the same shared folders. After numerous reboot on the Windows server (and no success), I've rebooted the Unraid server. Since, I was able to record multiple shows (at least 6-7) without changing anything else.

I'll keep an eye on this problem to see if I can find what is causing it (if it ever happen again). I just don't understand how Samba on Unraid was working fine with some workstation and not with the server even if everything seems to indicate that the problem was on the Samba/Linux side.

Hope it won't reoccur.

Thanks.
