July 30, 20187 yr I would like to know, incase the USB boot drive fails, and we have a lot of data stored across our drives, is it possible to still access those files on the Hard Drives using Ubuntu Linux, i.e. Mounting each drive on Linux? Or is it compulsary to create another UnRaid Boot drive, and restore the config files? Just asking incase of an emergency, there should be an alternate method to access our files.

It's possible for any standard Linux system to read the contents of the unRAID data drives. But you should preferably mount the disks read-only to not invalidate the parity. So no worry - there is no lock-in of your data files.

There is no rncryption on unRAID unless you explicitly set it up! One of the features of unRAID in that each disk is set up as an absolutely standard Linux file system. Even if you set up encryption on unRAID it is a standard Linux version so still readable on any Linux system.

The important thing if deciding to encrypt the drives is to make sure to have a backup of the encryption key. Neither unRAID nor any other system will be able to read an encrypted volume if the key is lost. At least for the normal people who haven't a relative working at NSA.
