September 25, 201015 yr I am looking for a server that is primarily a media server but may also use it for FTP and torrents. How does this list look? September 25, 201015 yr Yep, you'll need two of the breakout cables you listed. So I'm guessing you are going for a 12 drive capacity (8 hot swap, 4 internal)? If that's your goal, then everything looks perfect.
October 25, 201015 yr I'm looking at similar set up, still good setup, and recommendation on changing anything? motherboard mainly? also can't find SUPERMICRO AOC-SASLP-MV8 PCI Express x4 Low Profile SAS SAS RAID Controller on canada newegg, other recommendations? Thanks
October 25, 201015 yr I'd recommend you ditch the drive cage that comes with the CM590 and buy another of their aftermarket cages. The aftermarket cage is far easier to work with. It has little shelves for the drives to sit on, and the screws go straight into the drives. The stock cage has rubber grommets, and the drives float, so it can be more difficult to align the hole, grommet and drive, especially as you slide the drive around and end up popping the grommets loose. Also, the top and bottom drives' screw holes are obscured by the structure of the cage itself. You have to thread your screw through two holes in the cage, which is like playing "Operation". On the aftermarket cage, it has detachable "sides" that go onto the cage after the screws are all in. Much better. Finally, if you're at all OCD about appearance, having two of the aftermarket cages plus a regular cage will look weird in the case.
October 25, 201015 yr Oh, and for almost the same money, why not go to a more modern chipset with the ASUS M4A785-M?

So go with three COOLER MASTER STB-3T4-E3-GP and ditch the internal one? Any alternative to the SUPERMICRO AOC-SASLP-MV8 PCI Express x4 Low Profile SAS SAS RAID Controller?
October 25, 201015 yr Any alternative to the SUPERMICRO AOC-SASLP-MV8 PCI Express x4 Low Profile SAS SAS RAID Controller? I haven't seen any alternatives that compete in terms of the number of high speed ports for the money you put into it.
