Rebuild After 2 Failed Drives

Featured Replies

So apparently I’ve managed to fry two of my hard-drives and I was hoping for some advise on the safest / easiest way to get everything back up and running.

A little bit of background – I was trying to upgrade to a new server (whilst keeping the current Unraid array) and things went horribly wrong:

  • Ran full Parity check – PASSED
  • Backup of array (IMPORTANT!)
  • Moved drives from old server to new server.
  • Test boot Unraid from USB stick with no drives connected.
  •  Run MemTest  - PASSED
  •  Memory & CPU all detected and no errors.
  •  Plugged in hard-drives and switched on.

At this point the case fans spun-up for less than a second, before stopping and a red warning light appeared on the PSU.

Further investigation & testing revealed that the culprit appears to be a ‘Molex to Sata Power splitter’.  The 2 drives it connected no longer spin-up and aren’t detected by the OS.  I’ve tried all the drives in the old server – the 2 on the molex splitter aren’t detected, but the other 2 seem fine.

The good news is I have full backups (minus a few easily replaceable items).

The bad news is that I obviously can’t restore from parity as I only have one parity drive – so repairing this is going to take a while….

I just don’t know what’s possible and how to minimise any chance of errors (at this point the backups are the only copy!)  The backups aren’t 100% complete and are scattered over multiple smaller drives – so no matter what I do, I’m going to need to rebuild parity at some point.

Current Drives:

  -   PARITY  - Working.  Parity

  -   DISK A  - Working

  -   DISK B – Not Spinning up

  -   DISK C  - Not Spinning up

I’ve got replacement disks for B & C.  Before I do anything else, I’m going to pre-clear these (running on the new server).  This will stress-test both the drives and the new hardware - if it’s going to fail again, I’d prefer it to do so on empty disks!  Its been a while since I’ve done it, but if the drives are pre-cleared I can just add them to an array without needing to rebuild parity?

Rebuild Process:

  -  Create new array with just the working PARITY & DISK A.

  -  As the new drives pass pre-clear, add them as empty drives to the array.

  -  Restore backups directly to the array.

Is it possible to rebuild the array with just the existing disk A without losing data (from disk A)?  Since Unraid already recognised these drives, can I just tell it to forget drives B & C & then rebuild parity?

Would this work?  Or are there potential issues I haven’t thought of yet?

Is it possible my drives aren’t actually dead? (I’m clutching at straws– but I’m not a hardware expert so its possible I’ve missed something).

Any advise will be gratefully received!

Yes, tools -> new config

Just make sure old disk1 is assigned to a data slot.
