Wow, you guys are great! Thanks for all of the help and tips.

I am about 60% through a rebuild right now, so I don't want to disturb anything, but as soon as I have a healthy array I will copy the contents of both of my EARS drives to empty Samsung drives using Midnight Commander. I really think it is better to just get rid of the EARS drives before I get into any further trouble...:)

Many thanks again guys!

Ok, I just spent 48 hours rebuilding disk2. According to unMENU's main page all drives are listed as green OK. According to unRAID's main menu disk 2 has a green ball but is listed as unformatted. How do I get this disk back online? I tried stopping and restarting the array, but I got exactly the same results. I am afraid to do anything drastic after waiting 48 hours to rebuild...:)

'unformatted' means that the drive didn't mount.  Try just refreshing the page to see if maybe unRAID just took a bit longer to mount that disk.  If the rebuild completed successfully, the drive should appear as normal.

At the console I am getting some sort of reiserfs error message and I am being asked if I want to run reiserfsck. It found some sort of error at a certain block (I forgot to write the block number down).

Edit: While I was wondering what to do, I decided to run reiserfsck --check, as outlined here:

http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php?title=Check_Disk_Filesystems

I trust that in the "check" mode no changes will be made (much like chkdsk and scandsk in Windows). I am waiting for the outcome now...

Ok, here is the bottom line:

Bad nodes were found, Semantic pass skipped

1 found corruptions can be fixed only when running with --rebuild-tree

This doesn't sound good...:(

It is not as bad as it might seem...  It can usually fix the problems. (you are running reiserfsck on the /dev/md? device, right?

where disk1 = md1, disk2 = md2, etc...

Yup, I followed the instructions and am working on disk2...:)

Should I go ahead and run with the --rebuild-tree switch?

I don't think I have anything to lose at this point, unless there is something else I should try first.

Here is more of the error report:

Checking internal tree.. \block 217842822: The level of the node (1445) is not correct, (4) expected

the problem in the internal node occurred (217842822), whole subtree is skipped

finished

Well, by running reiserfsck --rebuild-tree I ended up with a totally trashed disk, but I learned a lot in the process. All of the files on the disk were large files that I made myself by ripping my Blu-rays and remuxing to .MKV. After running reiserfsck I only had 2 usable files out of about 75 files. The lost+found directory contained a bunch of useless fragments.

Oh well, back to work reripping my Blu-rays...:)

If it would not be too much trouble, I have a few more questions:

1. Disk1 and Disk2 are the two WD "EARS" drives that are in my system that I want to remove. I have copied all of the data on Disk1 to Disk9 (a Samsung drive), and, as we all know, disk2 has crashed and burned. I have 2 new Samsung drives in my hand ready to replace the 2 EARS drives (that are both empty now). What is the quickest and easiest way to exchange both drives? If I remove one drive and replace it with a Samsung, then the parity disk will rebuild an empty disk, right? And that will take a long time, even though the disk is empty, right? And then I will have to do it all over again to exchange the second EARS drive? Or would it be quicker and easier to simply replace both drives at the same time and rebuild the parity drive instead?

2. When I set up user shares, can I specify a path rather than a drive? For example, let's say I want to create a share called "recent movies", but my movies are spread out among various disks in directories based on the decade they were released (70's movies, 80's movies, etc.). And let's say that I want to include 90's movies and 20's movies in that share. "90's movies" is spread out on 2 disks and "20's movies" on 3 disks. Can I define the share called "recent movies" as:

disk5/90's movies,disk6/90's movies,disk7/20's movies,disk8/20's movies,disk9/20'smovies

Can this be done? Is there some special syntax needed to do this (like putting quotes around everything)?

3. Sometimes I can not write to my array...It will write fine for hours on end and then suddenly Windows starts failing to write and gives me the error message "please remove write protect on <disk name in the array>" I am pretty sure that it is a problem with Windows networking and not with the array, as most of the time I can get things going again by rebooting the Windows machine. My question - do you think I should replace the Windows onboard NIC with a separate card with an Intel chip (or ????)? Any recommendations? My router is a Linksys RV042 and my switch is a Netgear GS116 gigabit. FWIW, networking never fails between the Windows machines, only between any given Windows machine and the array....very strange.
