starknetwork
Hi Does anyone know or have an opinion on whether the SuperMicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 8 port sata card is compatible with the BioStar TA690G motherboard? The motherboard has a x16 PCI-E slot, but are they backwards compatible on the older motherboards? I'm currently running two 4 port SATA sil3114 pci cards which I want to replace with something faster. Thanks Quote Link to comment
SSD
Some motherboards will only run a video card in the x16 slot. But they are the exception. Most motherboards work fine. And it sounds like you are already running an x1 card in that slot. If you haven't already, search the forums and Google to see if you can find anything relevant. Quote Link to comment
cassiusdrow
I used this motherboard for a while with a Rosewill RC-218 PCI Express x4 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816132018) in the PCIe x16 port without any issues. Quote Link to comment
Rajahal
I know for certain that the SuperMicro card will work in the Biostar A760G M2+, which is a very similar motherboard. Therefore, I would be very surprised if the card didn't work in your board. Still, if you want to be absolutely sure, just call or email Biostar and ask them. Quote Link to comment
starknetwork
Thank you all four of your replies! I used this motherboard for a while with a Rosewill RC-218 PCI Express x4 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816132018) in the PCIe x16 port without any issues. This sounds pretty conclusive, think I'll give it a shot. Cheers All Quote Link to comment
jtown
Just out of curiosity, what kind of performance were you getting with two sil3114 cards? I've got one that I used to preclear on an ancient system and just a single drive can saturate it. Preclearing 3 2tb drives at once took over 3 days. Now I just do one at a time. I'm kinda curious to know how slow things run with 8 drives on the PCI bus. Quote Link to comment
starknetwork
Just out of curiosity, what kind of performance were you getting with two sil3114 cards? I'm kinda curious to know how slow things run with 8 drives on the PCI bus. At the moment it is not too bad, I have 4 drives on the motheboard (1.5tb Parity, 750gb, 750gb, 1tb), 4 drives on the first PCI card (500gb,1tb,1tb,1.5tb), and 2 drives on the second PCI card (1.5tb, 300gb (not part of the array)). It takes about 20 hours to run a full sync, though I do realise I could probably reduce this by rearranging the drives such that the larger drives are on the MB ports. I don't remember how long the last pre-clear I did took, I get the feeling it was arround 24 hours for 1.5tb, but really can't be sure. The issue I have noticed, is that if I want to transfer from one of the PCI HD's over the network I only get 30MB/s, where as the MB drives are faster. I imagine by the time I have filled the second PCI card performance will really suffer, especially on a parity sync. Quote Link to comment
starknetwork
I now have the card, and can confirm it works with the BioStar TA690g. Quote Link to comment
