How Do I Update The BIOS

Featured Replies

Yo got a Dell Optiplex 980 at a garage sale for 20 bucks last week. Decided to throw a few extra hard drives into it and installed unRAID on it. Noticed the BIO version is A16 the most recently available is A18 how can I update the BIOS while running unRAID?

Personally, I would be reading on the MB manufacturer's website exactly what the changes were in the two updates.  If they don't impact your present usage, I would NOT try to install the latest version!  The reason being is that there is always the chance (granted very small but still a possibility) that the update will brick the MB.

Now the Manufacturer's website will also provide with complete instructions and files to do the update.   The procedure will vary from MB to MB.  Some have a option to update the BIOS from a option in the BIOS and others will require a DOS boot disk/flash_drive.  But I don't believe any MB allow you to install any BIOS update directly from any OS.   (An OS can patch the BIOS but it is just that,  a patch.  It has to be redone every time the OS boots.)
