Accessing server with no VGA or IPMI...

Featured Replies

Hi all

So, I have myself a Supermicro X9DRL-3F. Goes great. When I first got it, everything worked fine. Connected via VGA to set things up, connected via IPMI just to play around. After playing around for a bit, I could no longer get IPMIView running on my laptop. This didn't bother me, since I didn't really need it, and always figured I'd get around to figuring it out "eventually". Meanwhile, everything else works fine. Then, I needed to unplug and plug-in my VGA cord a few times, and the VGA port (which got a bit bent during shipping but still worked) finally seems to have given up. So, I decided to try fixing up the IPMI.

The thing is, I realised that I have no idea what the IPMI IP address is. So, installed IPMI Tool via Nerd Tools, and I can "IPMITool lan print" and see that the IP Address is set to "0.0.0.0". Not useful. I installed the IPMI Tools plug-in via community apps, and I can get sensor data through that. The option is there to change the IPMI IP address, and doing so results in a "connection successful" message, but IPMITool still reports "0.0.0.0". I can change the IP Address via IPMItool at the command line, and IPMITool reports the changed IP Address, but I can't connect -- IPMIView reports that the connection is offline. Rebooting the server resets the reported IP to "0.0.0.0".

I would try throwing in a graphics card and getting into the BIOS, but I believe the BIOS defaults to inbuilt graphics, which outputs to the non-functional VGA port.

So, in short: anyone out there have any idea how I can either fix my IPMI problem or change my BIOS settings? I can access the web GUI just fine, and can open a terminal, but want to be able to access the server directly.

It was som time since I used ipmitools, but have you tried to set the IPMI LAN interface to get IP from DHCP?
