Cache Drives

Featured Replies

So have been reading up on cache drives and just a bit lost. I plan on using unraid box mostly for plex and my main file downloader for the household. Also might run some VMs. other than having the vm drive stored on the cache drives, do cache drives help for plex or downloading files?

Also can the cache drives be m.2 drives via pcie card? Thinking about using this card with just 2 m.2 drives. https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-M-2-X16-V2-Threadripper/dp/B07NQBQB6Z/ref=sr_1_30?crid=3V1P1G2KJW8Y1

what size should the m.2 drives be? and if 2 are used it should be put in a raid 1 so if one fails no loss of data correct?

And how does the cache drives function? is everything by default recorded to the cache drive first, and then at 3am it records that data to array? What if I have more data being transferred to the system than the cache has room for?

I have alot of drives (1tb-2tb each) of data that I need to sort through and get transfered and will easy be more than a cache drive will hold.

What is a good cache size? What size would be a waste?

and one last thing in regards to my data I need to sort through, can I hook up my drives directly to unraid and transfer the files locally within unraid or do I need to have them hook to a PC and then do a network transfer? (Did not see a way to transfer within unraid)
