October 1, 20196 yr Hello, First let me say that I'm new to unRaid. Migrating my data from a Windows server box that wasn't cutting it anymore. Everything is going great so far. But I'm having an issue with configuring the Share split levels on my Movies, Music and TV Series shares. Here are the specs of my new server. Processor: AMD FX 8350 RAM: 32 GB Corsair Flash Drive: Cruzer Fit 16GB Cache Drive: Samsung SSD 883 DCT 480GB Party: WD 10TB WD100EMAZ (New Disk) Party2: WD 10TB WD100EMAZ (New Disk) Disk 1: WD 8TB WD80EMAZ (New Disk) Disk 2: WD 8TB WD80EMAZ (New Disk) Disk 3: WD 3TB WD30EFRX (Old Disk) Disk 4: WD 3TB WD30EFRX (Old Disk) This is how I have the three shares setup. Movies - High-water | Split only the top two directory level | Disk 3, Disk 4 | Cache: Yes Music - High-water | Split only the top three directory level | Disk 3, Disk 4 | Cache: Yes Series - High-water | Split only the top four directory level | Disk 3, Disk 4 | Cache: Yes Here is how the share directory is layed out. \Movies\Children\Movie Name\Movie File.mkv - Splits on "Movie name" \Music\Artist\Album\Track.mkv - Splits on "Album" \Series\Children\Series Name\Season #\Episodes.mkv - Splits on "Season #" Even though I have the settings above for the shares, the data ends up only on Disk 3 and not split across disks 3 and 4 like I'm expecting it too. Like wise I have other another share for Documents and Photos that's set to "Automatically split any directory as required" across disk 1 and 2 but all the data ends up on disk 1. So far, I have moved the data off and back on serval times attempting to understand the split level but nothing seems to work. Any suggestions are appreciated. Cheers, Joe
October 1, 20196 yr Community Expert All data will go to the first of the included disks until the high-water mark is reached. Then a new high-water mark will be established. The high-water mark for the disk3,4 share would be at 3 / 2 = 1.5 TB. Similarly for the disk1,2 share, 8 / 2 = 4 TB. Here is the wiki on High-water Allocation: https://wiki.unraid.net/Un-Official_UnRAID_Manual#High_Water
October 1, 20196 yr Community Expert Also, Split Level has precedence over Allocation Method, so even after the High-water mark, if Split Level says files belong together they will go to that disk.
October 1, 20196 yr Community Expert And, High-water is the default for a good reason. It is a good compromise between using the disks evenly, without constantly switching between disks simply because one disk temporarily has more free than another (Most Free).
October 1, 20196 yr Author I understand the High-water allocation method, but I'm using Split Level and it takes precedence over the Allocation method. If that is the case, then shouldn't my files split between the two drives regardless of the allocation method?
October 1, 20196 yr Community Expert Split level simply makes files stay together on the same disk. It has nothing to do with making it split files across disks. It makes it not split files that belong together. Go to that same wiki I linked and scroll down.
October 1, 20196 yr Author Ahh, Ok. Thanks. Can you verify that my split levels are right based folder layouts above?
October 1, 20196 yr Community Expert There is Help in the webUI for most things. You can toggle Help On/Off using Help (?) on the main bar. You can toggle help for a specific setting by clicking on its label. I don't actually use Split Level, but you seem to be saying you want Movies and Music split at the same level, but you have set them differently. I think you want Movies 2, Music 2, Series 3. Maybe someone will come along and correct me if I have this off by one.
