First server upgrade - parts replacement advice needed

Featured Replies

Hey all

I originally built my first Unraid server back in 2017 with the help of some great advice here.

A few years has passed and my usage of Unraid has increased a lot, and I have a far better idea of my usage requirements now.

My current server (made up of fairly old parts) has been starting to struggle with my requirements for some time.

I thought with Black Friday coming up I'd like some advice on what I would need to buy to achieve my usage goals.

I currently run the following:

  • Emby/Jellyfin
  • Sabnzbd
  • Radarr
  • Sonarr
  • Lidarr

I would like to add:

  • Nextcloud
  • Duplicati
  • A web server setup of some kind for PHP work
  • Possibly a few other dockers along the way

Currently I need to be able to run 3 x Emby streams at any one time, which is a bit of a struggle at the moment.

I'd also like to future proof myself as much as possible with my motherboard choice (and choices in general).
My wife has an aging iMac that I'd like to replace with an Mac VM at some point in the next year or so.
Possibly also a Windows gaming VM, though they would never be run at the same time.
Running 1 VM at a time will likely be a requirement at some point.

So my parts questions based on the above info:

  1. What sort of CPU would be required for the basic setup above?
  2. What about if I went for the VM setup (number of cores etc)? The Ryzen CPUs look attractive price wise, and I was thinking about getting a motherboard that supported Ryzen 3000 CPUs, but maybe get a 2nd hand 1st/2nd gen one for now until I need it. Is Ryzen a good choice these days? Happy to go Intel if that's still a better, more stable route.
  3. Based on the above any advise on motherboard? I can support full ATX.
  4. Currently running 5 drives (including parity/cache), but would like to support up to ~12 (I see the Dell PERC H310 recommended a lot). My storage is nearly full, so will likely need another drive or 2 soon.
  5. Need to replace my tiny cache drive - what size is reasonable for the above? 512GB/1TB?

Thanks so much for any help anyone can offer!

I've been doing some more research and have decided to go with a Ryzen 2700/2700x as I think it will meet my requirements at a good price, and allow me to create the VM for my wife.
I'd like a motherboard that would allow me to upgrade to a new Ryzen in the future if possible.

MSI B450 Tomahawk Max seems like a good value option and well reviewed, but would a different chipset be better for future upgrades?
Something else I'm not sure on. I plan on getting a Dell PERC H310, and I'll also be adding some form of dedicated graphics card.
Which PCI slot would the PERC run off?
