December 6, 20196 yr Isn't the stock cooler good enough? Are you trying to quiet it down or overclock?
December 16, 20196 yr Just built similar machine. Happy for now, learning and installing new apps. Moving from Synology DS411+II. Main reasons- more HDDs, faster CPU and cache, Plex HW transcoding and faster VMs. My config: 1 x Fractal Design Node 804 1 x ASRock X570M Pro4 1 x AMD Ryzen 5 3600 1 x Boxed cooler from 3900x. May move to Noctua D15s as quiter and no RGB. 1 x Zotac RTX 2070 Mini passed through to Windows 10 VM for Plex HW encoding and other GPU related tasks 2 x Corsair Vengeance LPX CMK64GX4M2D3000C16 (total 64Gb NON-ECC memory) 3 x WD Red 4TB (2 parity 1 data) 1x WD Red 2TB 1 x Hitachi 3TB 1 x WD Green 1,5TB 2 x WD Green 2TB 2x Sandisk 2tb SSD in RAID 1 as unassigned devices for VM, Docker and photos 2 x Samsung 970 EVO 1TB (cache pool) 1 x Corsair RM850x Edited December 16, 20196 yr by andrey_kk
May 12, 20206 yr Author This is what I end up with eventually: AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2950X Boxed ASRock X399 Taichi MSI R6870-2PM2D1GD5/OC (just for video out) 2x WD Red (256MB cache), 8TB Fractal Design Meshify C Noctua NH-U12S TR4-SP3 4x Corsair Vengeance LPX CMK32GX4M1D3000C16 Seasonic Prime Ultra 650W Titanium 2x Samsung 970 EVO 1TB Works very smooth now for a couple of months! May 12, 20206 yr Hmm, nice build. Having a little RAM envy over here. This is what I have currently: Asrock taichi x399 with Tr2950 (but started with a 1920x.) 64Gb Corsair Dominator 2x WD 1Tb nvme Passed to 2 machines 2x Plexstor 512 Gb Passed to 2 machines 2x Samsung 1Tb for cache array 3x WD 3Tb array data 2x 2070RTX EVGA 2x 960 EVGA SSC Allegro pro 4x USB pcie U.2 port to pcie 4x adapter 4x insignia usb hubs My use case is a bit different- using it for a 4 headed gaming machine. Looks like with what you are planning, you'll have quite a bit of capacity sitting idle. Should be plenty powerful to spin up a couple nice VMs in addition to your docker implementations.
June 5, 20206 yr Hey guys, also interested on moving my server into a node 804 and pairing it with a 3700x. I realise the asrock board is the only x570 matx available. Can you maybe clear up some questions for me? Do I need more than 1 gpu if I run unraid headless and use my current gtx 980 to pass through to a Windows 10 vm? I would also like to install my Sas controller - perc h310 and my Gpu on this board. Is there enough room? I feel like from the videos I have watched it should work OK. It's mainly the gpu issue that's hold me back 2bh. I have read so much stuff but I remain as confused as I was at the start. Appreciate the help.
