Advice on backing up files from VM

Featured Replies

I am running an OSX VM on an SSD under UnRaid. I would like to back up some of my files (not the whole VM) to the array and then on to a Synology NAS as a sort of three location backup (icloud / OS X, array, Synology NAS).

The array to NAS is fine - there are plenty of options and I am happy with that part.

Initially I was looking at mounting the array into the VM and then using something like chronosync to back up the files but it seems to put quite a load on the VM.... then I thought about time machine but backing up a time machine image to the NAS makes me nervous as if it corrupts, I wouldn't know..... similar thoughts with Duplicati as it creates encrypted files

So, I am just wondering what the most efficient process would be. The VM is on 24/7 as is UnRaid so I don't really have to worry about how long the backups take.

Time Machine approach is the best option in my opinion. Your can backup to smb share or usb disk attached directly to the VM. Don't overthink that, backup suppose to be reliable.
