[Resolved] Disks errors at the start of Unraid

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Hi,

I've bought recently a PCIe card for adding sata ports on my Unraid Server.

I've succeeded to put my disks in and use it in Unraid. But when I restart my server, Unraid tell me I have 2 disk errors (I have 2 disks on the card) with millions erros on the main page. The ID of the disk on the array change (sdg and sdh) but the ID of my disks never change (sdi and sdj).  After the start of Unraid, if I stop and start the array, it's working again.

But after doing this, my logs files are full and this give me issues (for VMs) and I can't restart my server remotly (My VPN Servers is on this unraid server).

There is the name of my card : SATA controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88SE9235 PCIe 2.0 x2 4-port SATA 6 Gb/s Controller

I saw the Marvell controller are bad, I hope this is not that

Thanks for your help

We don't recommend Marvell for Unraid, and the 9230/9235 appear to be the worst offenders, please post the diagnostics: Tools -> Diagnostics.

Yeah, that really looks like the typical Marvell controller problem, it's dropping the disks, best bet is to replace it with one of the recommended ones.

Ok, I will return this card, I've just bought it.

For buy an other one, did you thinks one of this 2 card would be good ?

Not good, Asmedia based controllers work fine, but they are 2 port controllers, anything Asmedia with more than two ports usually uses SATA port multiplier(s) and that's no good (there might be exceptions, I think I remember seeing one that used multiple 2 port Asmedia chipsets), if 5 ports are enough look for a JMB585 based controller, or look for an 8 port LSI HBA.

Hi,

Sorry for the late reply.

I returned my Marvel controller and bought a 5 ports JMB585.

It took a long time to come, I just receive it yersterday and put it today. Everything looks fine and works perfectly for now, thanks very much for your help. 😃
