First Build (inspired by ltt)

Featured Replies

Hello all

I'm sure this sounds like a silly question for the majority of the users on this forum, but my current build intention is a 3700x on a B550-E from asus, primarily running as a home file server (some homework folders etc.) and plex server, and possibly more when I learn more and become more experienced in the OS. The build is unsurprisingly inspired by the ltt 320TB server video and one thing that they didn't cover particularly well I don't think is at what point you can remove the graphics card used for configuration. At some point I hope to add a permanent gpu but I currently cannot justify the purchase at the moment.

Long winded, I know, sorry. So ultimately my question is, at what point can I remove the gpu that I had configured the system with? Do I have to configure the array before shut down or can I remove it as soon as it is soon as the server is discoverable on the network?(obviously after a shut down, I wouldn't just pull it out of the pcie slot while the system is running)

Thanks in advance

Once you get Unraid booting the first time you don't need graphics. Many of us run headless and just manage our server with the webUI over the network. I never have a monitor attached after I get the build working.

thanks, I'm just wondering at what point can I run headless? Like, can I shutdown the server from the webgui and remove the gpu once the command line starts rolling or should I configure the array first?

Some motherboard will not boot without GPU.

You can use any PCI-E GPU.

I have a few GT710's about that I picked up for less thank $15 on ebay, GT210 and others can be had for $10 or less.

Any cheap fanless card is fine... idle power consumption around 5W, you never know when you need to access the BIOS, or see a boot screen error.

If the board will boot without gpu then you don't need one at all, unless you need to get into the BIOS.

Just use the Customise and Static IP options in the USB creation tool to assign a fixed IP.
