  1. Because you can't. You have to "boot into" the memtest program from the boot menu. It is not a linux program you can just run on an active machine. You will need to plug in a keyboard and monitor to do further troubleshooting. Thanks, I'll have to move things around to get a monitor attached.
  2. Rob, thanks for the reply. I did do a search concerning the transport error. most of the threads I saw were about memory and resulting processes being killed. Since my log doesn't have explicit memory errors they weren't much help (although I did set up a swap file to pick up a bit of memory). I may have to do some more searching to try to find a reply from Tom at limetech. It would be nice to know that this is being addressed. concerning the memory reported I did look at the bios when I set up the server and I "thought" I reduced the video ram to as low as it would go. But your right, 512k seems like a lot. I'll have to move a monitor around and check it again.
  3. Joe L., first thanks for spiltting this off. However I'm having a nooby kinda issue and I hope you can gently help. My system is running headless so I can't select the boot option to run memtest. when I telnet in and move to the /boot directory and try to run memtest I get a message saying "cannot execute binary file". At that point I'm stuck so i got back to the gui and restart the array. I've found lots of posts telling folks to run memtest and quite a few referencing the option in the boot process but nothing telling us how to run it from an active server. Thanks in advance.
  4. OK, well I seem to have something more fundamental going on then the data rebuild. My shares keep disappearing frequently. Multiple times a day. And the only thing I can do is to reboot the server. I'm only running a couple of plug-ins (simpleFeatures & Plex) and I've tried booting without SF. I've also added a swap file on my cache drive and I've set the cache_pressure to 200 to make more RAM available. Nothing in that list has helped. I've attached a syslog and would really appreciate some help cause I just don't know what to do next. syslog.2013.03.13.txt
  5. Still curious about an answer but in the mean time the rebuild finished this afternoon and a reboot brought the shares back.
  6. I had an issue with a drive and had to remove it from the array and then add it back. This triggered a data rebuild that has been running for almost two days and has about a day to go. Everything has been fine during the rebuild and I've been able to use the server as I normally do. But last night after the mover process finished all of my shares disappeared. I can access the individual drives but the SHARES page of the gui is blank. I'm pretty sure that rebooting the server will fix this problem but I'd really like to wait for the data rebuild to finish so it doesn't have to restart a three day process. Is there any way to remount the shares from the console? I've also attached the syslog in case anyone can see a larger problem looming. thanks. syslog.txt
  7. sure would like to see some more discussion on this. My monthly parity check takes about 3 days (at about 5.8mb/sec). Everything else is very slow during the checks but still on the right side of usability (but just barely).
  8. Sorry to pick up an old thread but i'm having the same issues with the exact same error in my log. The only way to recover is to restart the server. And then, after awhile the gui crashes. Has anyone truly resolved this?
  9. I believe you are right about the TR5M but that isn't my issue right now. My issue is trying to avoid using the TR5M by getting all four bays in the EX470 to work. Any thoughts on what I'd look for in the syslog?
  10. I think all of the drives were working when I pulled the plug on it. But, that was about 18 months ago. The CPU is an AMD Sempron 1.8 GHz. I currently have a third drive running in an eSATA enclosure so I can continue testing unRAID. This morning I'm going to try to boot NAS4Free and I'll report back.
  11. Moving to version 4.7 made no difference. I'm off to the Mediasmart forums to see if I can find any info.
  12. Oh, this makes my heart beat faster!!!! This is almost exactly my situation (except I have an ex470 that I've upgraded the RAM in). I even have the same eSATA chassis. I'm part way through this little experiment and am hitting one problem so far. Only drives in the first and third bays are being recognized. I've opened the case, checked the connections to the backplane; removed the backplane and reseatted it and still have the same problem. I'm now rebuilding my USB with version 4.7. I'm hoping the problem was with the RC version of 5.x that I was using. It would be to give this old hardware new life! Richard
  13. OK, I'm going to give this a try since it doesn't seem that I can do any harm. One more question though; I've downloaded the current release candidate of v5.x and need to know if there will be an upgrade path to the full version when it's finalized. Or, should I start with the 4.7 version? Thanks yet again.
  14. I've poked around on that site and didn't find anything. Mostly discussions of people abandoning their hardware and starting over. I may take an afternoon and try that before I toss it in the bin. Thanks.
  15. I have an old HP mediasmart server that used to run Windows Home Server. It seems to meet the requirements of unRAID but I don't know if it can be configured to boot from a USB drive. So, I'm wondering if anyone in this community has tried (and hopefully succeeded) installing unRAID on this hardware. Thanks in advance.
