  1. Thank you my GTX 960 had this issue.  This addition solved it for me.  It worked immediately on start....no restart required.

Background-I had previously used a trimmed rom file as in spaceinvader one's videos and all was working until some point in the last few months.  I presume it was upgrade to 6.10.   Code 43 then.

the simple kvm key add above with no other changes or drivers.

  2. I have added an old windows SSD to unraid and how to use it in a cache pool along with another similar drive already set to cache.

I am unable to mount the drive (it tries briefly).  In the log I see:

    Feb 15 07:10:47 Server unassigned.devices: Mounting partition 'sdd1' at mountpoint '/mnt/disks/S21HNXAG862535Y'...
    Feb 15 07:10:47 Server unassigned.devices: Mount drive command: /sbin/mount -t 'ntfs' -o rw,noatime,nodiratime,nodev,nosuid,nls=utf8,umask=000 '/dev/sdd1' '/mnt/disks/S21HNXAG862535Y'
Feb 15 07:10:47 Server unassigned.devices: Mount of 'sdd1' failed: 'Mount is denied because the NTFS volume is already exclusively opened. The volume may be already mounted, or another software may use it which could be identified for example by the help of the 'fuser' command. '

I saw another thread like this here and the moderator spoke of fixing this SSD before trying to mount but not sure how?  The PC it came out of is dismantled.

    Any ideas?

    Hi there

Totally understand your request and why you would want a fully documented backup solution. There are plenty of different tools out there to utilize for backups. There have been a number of different guides written from different individuals on how to do this.  We even wrote a blog post recently detailing one (https://unraid.net/blog/unraid-server-to-server-backups-with-rsync-and-wireguard).

The reality is that backup is a business in and of itself. There are plethora of different providers out there that create various software solutions that work with various platforms such as Unraid. If we ever do create a first-party solution for backups for unraid we will obviously document it but until then we do rely on the community and other backup software solution providers to provide guidance.  That being said, we may end up creating a guide under our wiki in the future, but no ETA on when that will happen just yet.

@jonp Question, can you just tell me the things I need to backup for a windows VM and where they reside?

I have no issue bringing down the VM to do this.

I see in some of these scripts a backup of xml, some ram files (?), and then of course the Vdisk.

How would I manually go about doing a backup and then restoring?   I mean no tool just copying files myself.

Thanks for anytime you can spare this new but enthused user?

  4. As a new user, there are explanations here on what needs to be backed up and where it resides I had not seen before but I have been researching this for days.  On VM backup Spaceinvader's videos are years old but it seems he was grabbing xml, OVFM RAM, and vdisks with scripts.  From this thread I gather we can shut off VM and it just be XML and vdisk thats required as a backup or alternatively XML and windows backup iso made from within VM but for the later would we then have to reinstall windows and then restore backup?  I ask rhetorically because for us new and novice users this level of basic information is needed.

I do hope this very basic outline is something I might find in documentation somewhere either now or in the future.  Until then this thread is best thing I have found.

    Best, C

  5. Some data to add.  I noticed when this happens UNRAID seems fine...I come back to find VNC still connected but clean desktop.  Went into Windows VM event log and see Event 41 rebvoots in log.  On restart there is a bugcheck entry that 0x0000001a (0x0000000000009696, 0xffff85801785cb40, 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000).

I google this and the 1a error says memory management error.  The 0x0000000000009696 is  supposed to be specfic cause.  See below excerpt:

    Bug Check 0x1A: MEMORY_MANAGEMENT

The MEMORY_MANAGEMENT bug check has a value of 0x0000001A. This indicates that a severe memory management error occurred.

    MEMORY_MANAGEMENT Parameters

Parameter 1 identifies the exact violation.

    0x9696

A PFN (parameter 2) was encountered with a corrupted linkage no longer connected to its top level process. This indicates corruption in the PFN structures.

Is is possible my new memory has an issue?  Memtest from unraid just reboots my machine and removes USB from boot priority.  So I downloaded memtest 86+ and I am trying now.  Not sure memtest86+ vs memtest86.

  6. Been using UNRAID for sometime as NAS and with Docker.  Decided to upgrade hardware and delve into VM.

Main Issue:  Issue I am having is when I am away VM appears to have rebooted however I cannot read logs from it to get a clue on cause.

Question:  The forums are vast with issues but I have not found my issue or a means to troubleshoot can someone point me in the right direction?

    Specifics:

    1. Brand new install of 6.9.2 on new hardware
    2. brand new 5900X and X570 aourus elite with 2TB Samsung NVME...newest bios on Aorus Elite MB
    3. VM does not passthough a GPU and only uses VNC.
    4. Used Spaceinvader videos for setting up as daily driver and havent gotten to part 2 of passing a GPU.  so just VNC and still having problems.
    5. All the virt IO drivers in and things working great when in it
    6. Windows is not activated yet but I did do in install a few basics and turned off various power mgmt settings
    7. Problem occurs when I leave the machine for some time running a looped video or doing some other looping task within VM.  I return to find the VM started but at initial windows screen desktop and the looping task gone as if VM restarted.  I can open various windows when I do this and come back and find them closed and gone too as if restarted.
    8. I try to view UNRAID logs for VM but I just get a white chrome pop up window and the logs never populate.
    9. Then I look at UNRAID system log (icon upper right of main page) and see nothing of consequence.
    10. In tools> system log I see many entries but nothing obviously an issue.
    11. 2 curious things...when I do Passmark or other benchmarks within the VM the memory section has some tests that fail to function.  Also. I at times look at this VM and see although I have configured 32Gb of RAM max for this VM it shows much less.

I'll keep reading forums but a pointer would greatly help!

    Diagnostic files attached.
