  1. Hello Everyone, i finally gave my unraid server some much needed upgrades

    Mobo replaced, cpu replaced, ram and swapped out HSA card from a 8 to a 16

    AMD Ryzen 5 3600X 6-Core @ 3800 MHz
    Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. PRO B550-VC (MS-7C56) , Version 3.0
    LSI 9201-16i IT Mode HBA 8x PCIE 16 Lane SAS Card 6Gbps

    The system booted after i recreated the flash drive and added the old config, but when ran a parity to ensure everything is good (no data was added to the array) it was crawling and generating lots of errors, no hardware errors on the drives though.

    Can anyone shed some light on this? I thought it was the onboard Raid on the motherboard, but i am using the m.2 slot yet.

  3. Hello all,

    I have a quick question. I just got 4 10TB best buy easy store drives (on sale for 180 each BTW https://www.bestbuy.com/site/wd-easystore-10tb-external-usb-3-0-hard-drive-with-32gb-easystore-usb-flash-drive-black/6290669.p?skuId=6290669)

    Currently i have Norco 20 bay, which is maxed out, I wanted to know if i could connect 1-2 via USB and preclear them, this way i can save time on adding them to the array after shucking them.

    Also any thoughts on if prelcear via USB or using internal slot is any different (my thought is no as the same secotrs get read, then written and then read again regardless of the interface?)

    In my opinion, that is the safest way.  You start with good parity on the array and you check that you still have good parity when finished.  I am assuming that you have precleared (or run some sort of manufacturer's testing program on all the disk sectors to get you past any infant-mortality issues) those new 10TB drives...

    Edit:  I would also assume that you are shelving each of those old parity drives until you have completed the last parity check.

    I have yet to get the drives in, but that is the plan (to preclear them before using them), and thanks! i rather be safe and then sorry tho it might take a week to get the upgrade done lol

  5. Quick question,

    If I currently have dual 8tb parity drives, and i want to swap them with 2 x 10tb drives, what would be the best process?

    Do a full parity check, shut down, swap out 1 8tb with the 10tb, power on, let it rebuild the parity on the new drive then power down replace the 2nd disk and let it rebuild, and then do a full parity check before changing any data?.

  6. Question,

    I have noticed that all of my Shares are set to: Minimum free space: 400GB, and my cache disk is a 300GB raptor drive. Could it be that unraid is now seeing that the disk of the cache disk is under 400gb that it skips it?

    yup i repalced my cache with a spare drive and that was the issue. closing thread

  7. hello All,

    I am currently using unraid 6.3.5 with 14 Disks, 2 Partiy Disks, 1 Cache Drive and 1 Hot spare. After moving data around to slowly format all my drives to XFS using manual methods and Unbalance (7 drives still to go ), All new data being added to the shares are doing straight to the Data drives.

    I have checked that settings on the shares via the Global Share settings, and use cache disk is turned on using Min Free Space:2000000.

    All the shares are set to use the cache disk.

    If i go directly to \\UNRAID\Cache\Share1 and copy the data there it will allow me and the mover will run overnight to move to the correct locations.

    Im not sure where to start troubleshooting this issue or what logs or screenshots to share with the user community.

    Thank you for any help

    Ok, remove the contents of the file (/boot/config/plugins/unbalance/unbalance.conf), but leave it there (an empty file).

    Then start it from the command line again.

    Thank you!, it now runs properly, I was also able to stop the service, then turn it back on via the web interface!

    Not really.

    So, if you try

    $ cd /usr/local/emhttp/plugins/unbalance
    $ ./unbalance

    it comes up empty again ?

    root@TOPSITE:~# cd /usr/local/emhttp/plugins/unbalance
    root@TOPSITE:/usr/local/emhttp/plugins/unbalance# ./unbalance

      -dryRun

      -folders string

      -log string
            pathname where log file will be written to (default "/boot/logs/unbalance.log")
      -notifyCalc int

      -rsyncFlags string

    it now gives me the above results

    This is the problem here. The executable isn't starting.

    This used to be an issue in 1.8.x, but it was "solved" :D

    I believe that installing via the github link doesn't create the conf file it expects, although it should work without one.

    Try the following :

    $ nano /boot/config/plugins/unbalance/unbalance.conf
    # <paste the following>

    SERVICE="disable"
    PORT="6237"
    RUNAS="nobody"

    # click control + x, then y, then <enter> to save the file

    Then go the settings page and enable the server.

    tried it, same issue:

    root@TOPSITE:/boot/config/plugins/unbalance# ls
    unbalance-3.0.0.tgz*  unbalance.cfg*  unbalance.conf*
    root@TOPSITE:/boot/config/plugins/unbalance#

    I was able to create the .conf file and save with the above code, but still unable to start it.

    Do i need to reboot the server after creating the conf file?

    here is the system log

    I will check if this causes trouble.

    Do you mean that all the buttons are disabled ?

    If that's the case, follow the quick start instructions.

    If that's not the case, please do the following

    $ killall unbalance
    $ cd /usr/local/emhttp/plugins/unbalance
    $ ./unbalance

    and post the output here to check it out.

    I have also attached what the web inference displays when i try to start the application.

    as requested:

    root@TOPSITE:/usr/local/emhttp/plugins/unbalance# killall unbalance

  12. Just learned about this great plug in as i want to convert my disks from reiserfs to xfs, i am running unraid 6.35 and have installed the plugin unBALANCE v3.0.0, but i am unable to get the status of it to change from Stopped, i have tried run as user with root and other users that have full read/write to the disks.

    I installed the plugin via the github link

    this is the only entry i can find in the log when i try to start the plugin.

  13. Good Morning Help Unraid people,

    I am having a strange issue, I keep getting errors when moving files from the cache drive to the array. I replaced the cache disk thinking it was probably easier then doing extending testing, but the problem still occurs. Strangely it only occurs with some files and not others, it seems to move all the files, but then will not delete it off the cache drive.

    there is another thread that seems to have the same problem:

    http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=27450.0

    but i dont want bother Tom if anyone else can help.

    attached is my syslog of a fresh restart and mover log.

    I would like to also add that i removed the cache disk, i was able to transfer the files without a problem directly to the array.

    Please let me know what other information you guys needs to help me out.

  14. 2 nights ago, during a parity check unraid detected one of my 2TB drives as failing, So I went out, and purchased a new one, Precleared it and it said it is good.

    but when rebuilding the parity, it failed. Attaching the syslog.

    Any reason a drive that passes preclear would fail in such a manner? I know the original drive failed since it failed the long scan of Western digital Diag software.

  15. So after finally moving over like 4-5 TB of data, takes forever using a 300GB raptor as the cache drive.

    2m34izd.jpg

    Original Build

    Drives were relatively hot, wasn't sure if it was just the massive amounts of writes i was making it do or just normal so i used a cheap fan to keep them cool

    29wwtw2.jpg

    after the transfer, a quick solution and the drives are running pretty good
